Joan Ginther became one of the most famous lottery winners in US history after winning four major Texas Lottery prizes totaling $20.4 million over 17 years.

Why some believe Ginther found an advantage
One theory centers on Bishop, Texas, where Ginther purchased several winning tickets. Three of her four major winning tickets were bought in Bishop, and two came from the same convenience store, Times Market. The pattern led to speculation that she understood how winning scratch-off tickets were distributed.
Another theory suggests Ginther used her statistical background to study scratch-off games, including information about remaining prizes and ticket distribution. Unlike draw games, scratch-off tickets are printed in batches, meaning players can sometimes use publicly available information about remaining prizes to make more informed choices.
However, there is no proof that Ginther discovered a secret formula or exploited the Texas Lottery system. According to a news report, her strategy, if she had one, was never publicly revealed.
A lottery legend who valued privacy
Despite becoming internationally known, Ginther avoided publicity and rarely spoke about her winnings. Friends described her as private and generous, saying she continued living modestly despite her fortune.
Ginther died in 2024 at age 77. She never publicly explained how she managed to win four major lottery prizes, leaving behind a story that remains a fascinating mix of mathematics, probability and extraordinary luck.
