State of Play’s TL;DR

  • Kalshi has banned George Santos from its platform for life.
  • The prediction market firm also fined the disgraced former US representative $71,356 after an investigation into market manipulation.

Kalshi said it has permanently banned former Rep. George Santos from its platform and imposed a $71,356 penalty after an investigation into alleged manipulation of contracts tied to President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address.

Kalshi said the lifetime ban is its first. The case also centers on alleged efforts to influence event-contract prices, an issue closely tied to market integrity in a sector overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

According to Kalshi, Santos placed wagers on whether he would attend the address and then made public statements about his plans in order to influence contract prices. The company said those trades allegedly netted him nearly $18,000.

Kalshi also said Santos failed to cooperate with its compliance investigation.

Alleged manipulation centered on State of the Union attendance

The investigation focused on contracts tied to Santos’s attendance at Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address. Kalshi alleged that Santos both traded on the outcome and publicly commented on whether he would attend, a combination the company said amounted to manipulation of the market.

That makes the case notable beyond the individual account action. Prediction markets let users trade on real-world events, and confidence in those markets depends on participants not trying to move prices through misleading or self-serving public statements tied to their own positions.

According to the Washington Examiner, the sanction has already been imposed.
