Massachusetts has launched its first online lottery platform, giving eligible players age 21 and older access to digital lottery products statewide. Officials expect the new platform to generate $70 million in net profit in its first year.
The Massachusetts Lottery rolled out Mass. Lottery Online on July 28, opening digital sales for several draw games and more than 20 eInstant titles. Lawmakers did not move forward with online casino legislation this year, leaving the lottery as the state’s lone regulated online gambling option.
Players can now buy tickets online for:
- Mass Cash
- Megabucks
- Mega Millions
- Powerball
- Millionaire for Life
The Lottery also added two new games, Mass 3 and Mass 4. Some products remain retail-only, including Keno, The Numbers Game, and The Wheel of Luck.
Platform includes RG controls
The eInstant catalog works like digital scratch tickets, with wagers ranging from 50 cents to $50 and an average prize payout of about 90%, according to The Sports Geek. The Lottery plans to add a new eInstant game every two weeks and also intends to introduce virtual horse racing.
The platform includes several responsible gambling controls:
- Deposit and spending limits
- Monthly reminders
- A session timer
- Pop-up reminders every 30 minutes after the first 30 minutes of play
Users must log in with multifactor authentication each day or when using a new device, and accounts can be active on only one verified device at a time.
Financially, Massachusetts is projecting more than $180 million in net profit by Year 3 and $360 million by Year 10. All profits are earmarked for the state’s Early Education and Care Operational Grant Fund.
Aristocrat Interactive operates the platform under a five-year revenue-sharing agreement and can receive up to 5% of revenue.
