State of Play’s TL;DR

  • A Massachusetts man’s nickname on a lottery ticket led to a $1 million payout to him.
  • He chose a one-time lump-sum payment of $650,000 before taxes.

A Quincy, MA, lottery player turned a familiar nickname into a $1 million payout after “tan” appeared as a winning word on a scratch-off ticket.

The win also comes with a $10,000 bonus for the retailer that sold the ticket.

The Massachusetts State Lottery player claimed a $1 million second-tier prize in the $2,000,000 50X Cashword scratch-off game. The ticket was purchased at Lucky Quick Pik, 19 Beale St. in Quincy. Online lottery is now available in Massachusetts.

Quincy player took lump-sum option

The winner was identified as Jakkrit Likhitpanyawat, who is also known as “Tan.” His nickname appeared as one of the winning words on the ticket.

Likhitpanyawat claimed the prize at Massachusetts Lottery headquarters on Aug. 3. He chose a one-time lump-sum payment of $650,000 before taxes rather than annual payments.

The Massachusetts Lottery says all five top prizes of $2 million in the 50X Cashword game have already been claimed.

At launch, the game also carried 10 second-tier prizes worth $1 million each. Only one of those $1 million second-tier prizes remains unclaimed.

The scratch-off win was reported alongside newly cited financial figures from the Massachusetts Lottery. For the fiscal year running from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, the lottery reported about $5.90 billion in revenue and roughly $1.05 billion in profit for the commonwealth.

Massachusetts Lottery recently launched online access through a dedicated lottery app.
