Online craps players appear to know which bets offer better value but often choose costlier ones anyway.

In a new report, Hard Rock Bet Online Casino analyzed more than 3.3 million craps bets placed from April through June 2026 in Michigan and New Jersey, plus more than 180 craps-related Google search queries.

The report, published Sept. 30, found the Field bet was the most frequently placed wager, while Odds bets, which carry no house edge, made up just 2% of selections.

Place bets lead online craps wagering

Place bets, which win if the chosen number rolls before a 7, accounted for 39% of all wagers, the largest category.

  • Place 6 and Place 8, widely considered stronger bets, made up 43.5% of Place bets
  • Place 4 and Place 10 made up 22.9%
  • Place 6 and Place 8 each carry a house edge of 1.52%

One-roll proposition bets, decided on a single roll of 2, 3, 11 or 12, accounted for more than 20% of wagers.

Field bet outranks the Pass Line

The Field bet was the most popular individual wager, placed more often than any single Place bet or the Pass Line. It covers totals of 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12 on one roll. Depending on payout rules, its house edge ranges from 2.78% to 5.56%, compared with about 1.41% for the Pass Line.

The Pass Line ranked only seventh, though it is widely seen as the foundation of basic strategy. Still, players placed nearly four Pass Line bets for every Don’t Pass bet, and Come bets outpaced Don’t Come by almost five to one.

Overall, players overwhelmingly bet with the shooter, the person rolling the dice, rather than against.

Odds bets barely register with players

Players can add Odds bets behind a Pass Line or Don’t Pass bet once a point is established. They are the only standard craps wager with no house edge, paying true odds. Yet they made up just 2% of wagers analyzed. Many players placed Pass Line bets without adding Odds.

Adding Odds lowers the overall cost of play because part of the wager carries no casino advantage. The combined house edge falls below 1% and drops further at tables offering higher Odds multiples.

Costlier bets drive outsize online casino profit

Bets with higher house edges made up just 16% of wagers but generated about 38% of the casino’s profit. Based on standard payouts, the house edge on one-roll bets such as 2, 3, 11 and 12 is roughly eight to 10 times the Pass Line’s.

Craps produced a casino hold of 3.60%, meaning Hard Rock Bet kept that share of the money wagered. Roulette’s hold was 3.18% in the operator’s earlier report, which analyzed more than 30.5 million bets and found players gravitating toward familiar numbers and superstitions.

The Hard Rock Bet craps report said popularity was not the reason for the higher hold, noting that players tended to choose less favorable bets despite better-value options.

Craps odds searches surge 70% nationwide

Nationwide, Google searches for online craps odds rose 70% over the past year, and searches for craps strategy rose 60%.

Hard Rock Bet compared search topics (rules, bets and payouts, and strategy) across four markets.

New Jersey online casino searchers appeared the most familiar with the basics: Only 36% of searches focused on rules, the lowest share, while 42% concerned bets and payouts and 22% strategy.

Michigan online casino players were similar, at 42% bets and payouts, 38% rules and 21% strategy, the second-highest strategy share.

In Ontario and Pennsylvania, 40% of searches focused on rules. Ontario had 41% on bets and payouts and 20% on strategy; Pennsylvania had 40% and 19%.

Thrill often beats strategy at tables

The data show players who grasp the fundamentals, as the preference for Place 6 and Place 8 indicates, but who still often choose bets with larger house edges.

The report concluded that players appear to prioritize thrill over more favorable strategies, a pattern the operator’s earlier roulette report showed doesn’t apply to all online casino games. Rising interest in strategy could narrow the gap.

Online craps is legal in Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In Canada, Ontario is the only regulated market.

The figures come from Hard Rock Bet’s own data in Michigan and New Jersey, so patterns may differ elsewhere. Players should confirm local eligibility requirements before betting.
