State of Play

  • A recent Belgian study reveals that video games with gambling-like elements, such as loot boxes and prize wheels, may increase the likelihood of teenagers engaging in real-money gambling within a year.
  • This research highlights the growing concern over young gamers’ exposure to gambling mechanics and the need for stronger protective measures across the US.

Researchers from KU Leuven and the University of Ghent surveyed over 2,000 Belgian youths aged 10 to 17 to investigate the connection between gambling-like video game features and real gambling behavior.

Conducted in two phases over two years, the study found that teens exposed to gambling-like elements in games were statistically more prone to gamble with actual money later. Elements like virtual casinos, prize wheels, and loot boxes featured heavily across gaming platforms, with boys more likely to engage than girls.

The team used a “cross-lagged panel model” to prove that gaming exposure led to real gambling, rather than the reverse. Notably, the research showed that positive gambling attitudes and intentions played a key mediating role.

Study could lead to more protections for kids

These findings imply an urgent need to revisit regulations around in-game gambling-like features, especially for minors. The study suggests expanding protections beyond loot boxes to include other elements, such as social casino games and gambling videos, to promote responsible gambling.

For players, awareness campaigns could provide valuable information on gambling risks tied to gaming. Operators may anticipate increased scrutiny and regulatory adjustments, which could impact game design and marketing strategies in the American market.

This research may prompt policymakers in the US to consider broader regulations for gambling-style mechanics within video games. With the growing interest in regulating digital gambling, the industry is likely to see continued evolution in how game content is managed and disclosed.
