YouTube is preparing to roll out stricter regulations on gambling and gaming content, with implementation set to begin Nov. 17. The platform, which already enforces tight rules on online gambling, will expand its restrictions to cover real-money casino streams, sweepstakes casinos, and certain violent video game material. The company says the revisions reflect its commitment to protecting young users and upholding community guidelines.
New rules for sweepstakes and online casinos
YouTube’s latest update introduces clearer definitions and stronger enforcement across three major categories of content:
1. Stricter rules for online casinos and gambling promotions
YouTube currently prohibits content that directs viewers to online gambling sites or apps not approved by Google. The updated policy broadens enforcement to include gambling involving items of financial value, including digital assets such as NFTs, video game skins, and cosmetic items. YouTube will also age-gate real-money online casino content and videos promoting online gambling.
2. New age gate for sweepstakes casinos
Sweepstakes casino videos, once classified under YouTube’s social casino category, will now be categorized as gambling content. They will be subject to age restrictions in line with traditional gambling streams.
The change mirrors Google’s recent update to its Gambling and Games policy. On Oct. 28, 2025, Google reclassified sweepstakes casinos, removing them from the social casino category and eliminating sponsored posts tied to them across its network.
3. Restrictions on graphic game scenes
YouTube will also apply age restrictions to certain violent video game scenes involving realistic human characters. The policy specifically targets content focused on torture or large-scale violence against unharmed civilians. This measure supplements existing guidelines covering graphic or disturbing material.
Content creators must revise any videos that violate the updated policies before Nov. 17. Edits, blurring, or content adjustments may be necessary. Noncompliant videos will be removed, but will not result in a strike against the creator’s account.
The push behind YouTube’s changes
The updated rules come after several months of scrutiny over gambling streams led by major influencers. High-profile cases, including Drake and Adin Ross promoting Stake casino content to underage viewers, have demonstrated how easily online gambling promotions can reach minors.
The broader US discussion around youth exposure to gambling has intensified:
- Celebrities have been used to promote gambling products to teenagers, prompting regulatory concerns.
- Lawmakers are urging federal agencies to target offshore operators that lack proper age verification.
- Google and other tech companies are tightening advertising rules for sweepstakes casinos.
The update will also address gambling influencers who conceal their ties to operators. Repeat violations may lead to demonetization or additional penalties once enforcement ramps up.
Blocking underage online gambling exposure
A central goal of YouTube’s new policy is to strengthen protections for underage users. The platform will prohibit any gambling content involving minors and will restrict content encouraging under-18 viewers to use betting products.
Direct links to gambling websites will be limited and allowed only when YouTube determines the content is intended strictly for adults. The platform is also defaulting to age-gating more content, and channels that appeal to younger or mixed-age audiences will no longer be permitted to market gambling products.
The shift aligns with broader concerns about minors gaining access to offshore gambling sites. Sen. Katie Britt recently urged the Justice Department to act against offshore operators that target young audiences and fail to verify age, a stance consistent with the growing push to protect children online.
Expect fewer online casino ads, stronger age controls
Creators in the gambling niche will need to adapt quickly. Clearer disclosures, transparent sponsorship notices, and compliance with the updated rules for sweepstakes casinos will be essential. Additional restrictions may emerge defining which channels with younger or mixed-age audiences can display.
For viewers, the update will mean fewer gambling ads within gaming content and stronger age-verification measures across the platform. YouTube is not banning gambling content altogether, but it is tightening standards in response to regulatory pressure and rising public concern.
