According to news by Syracuse.com, Butcher bought her winning ticket at Hanson Newsstand, a modest shop at 37 Hanson Place in Brooklyn — now among a short list of city retailers credited with selling a multimillion-dollar ticket this year. Lottery officials didn’t say when Butcher realized she’d won, but she has since traveled to the lottery’s headquarters to formally claim her prize.
Winners of large New York lottery prizes typically choose between annual installments and a reduced one-time payout. Butcher took the lump sum, a route many big winners prefer for its immediacy. After state and federal withholdings — standard deductions for a payout this size — she walked away with $1,242,851. Officials confirmed the amount but declined further comment on her decision to skip the annuity.
The 100Xtra game continues to draw players partly because its biggest prizes haven’t all been won. Three top prizes remain available, according to the lottery. Players can check remaining prizes for any scratch-off game through the official Game Report on the New York Lottery’s website, which shows how many top-tier prizes are still unclaimed for each active title.
Scratch-off tickets such as 100Xtra aren’t available for online purchase in New York. Players still need to buy them in person at one of the state’s roughly 17,000 licensed retailers. However, draw games such as Mega Millions or Lotto are available to New Yorkers through online subscriptions or licensed courier apps like Jackpocket.

Butcher’s win comes amid a lottery system that generates significant revenue for the state. Scratch-off games alone brought in more than $4.3 billion in sales during the 2024-25 fiscal year, and a substantial share of that money funds public education.
School districts across New York City’s five boroughs received roughly $1.4 billion in Lottery Aid to Education funding over the same period — a connection the lottery frequently highlights in its public messaging, framing each purchase as a contribution to classrooms even before any prize is drawn.
