World Cup 2026: Tournament basics for bettors

The 2026 FIFA World Cup features 48 teams for the first time, expanding from the traditional 32-team format. Matches will be played across 16 host cities in the US, Canada and Mexico, with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19, 2026.

The expanded field — and the novelty of a North American host — has produced a more competitive betting market than any previous edition, with sportsbooks reporting record pre-tournament interest across all markets.

Current World Cup betting odds: Full board

England+700
Portugal+800
Argentina+950
Brazil+950
United States+6000
Haiti+250000

Spain and France: The front two

Spain at +450 and France at +450–+500 dominate the market. Caesars Sportsbook soccer lead Mark Bickerdike described them as “rightfully the two teams to beat,” with a “notable step down to the next tier.”

More than 30% of BetMGM’s total World Cup wagers back either Spain or France, and both teams are among the top-three liabilities for every major book. The market consensus is clear: these two are the class of the field, though heavy public money makes them lower-value plays than their quality alone would suggest.

World Cup betting markets beyond the outright winner

The outright winner is just one of dozens of World Cup betting markets available in 2026. Popular alternatives include:

Group winners: Back which team tops each of the 12 groups. These resolve faster — the group stage ends by Day 18 — and often offer better value than outright futures.

Top goalscorer: Back a player to finish the tournament as leading scorer. Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the early favorites. Bet365 carries the deepest top-scorer market in the US.

Individual match betting: Bet the moneyline, Asian handicap or total goals on any of the 104 matches. FanDuel and DraftKings carry same-game parlays on every fixture.

In-play (live) betting: Bet as the game unfolds. Caesars and BetMGM are the strongest US sportsbooks for in-play World Cup markets, offering real-time odds on next goalscorer, next corner and match result.

The USA at 60-1: A once-in-a-generation bet?

The United States at +6,000 is the most emotionally compelling long shot on the board. DraftKings director Johnny Avello told ESPN: “If the US wins this, that’s great for our country and we’ll take our lumps.”

The USMNT ranks eighth in DraftKings’ outright market by total handle — remarkable for a 60-1 team. Home advantage is real: playing in packed American stadiums, with the full weight of national enthusiasm behind them, the US could genuinely exceed expectations. At +6,000, a $50 wager returns $3,000.

Betting responsibly during the 2026 World Cup

The World Cup runs for 29 days — a long time to manage a betting bankroll. Set a total tournament budget before the first game, spread it across multiple markets and games rather than committing it all to one outright, and use the deposit limits and self-exclusion tools every licensed sportsbook is legally required to provide.
