Boyd Interactive has recently acquired Resorts Digital, the online gambling operation of Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino.
Mark Giannantonio, president of Resorts, told the Associated Press that the deal had been arranged earlier this year and finalized on Sept. 1.
Key takeaways
- Boyd Interactive, part of Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming, purchased Resorts Digital for an undisclosed amount.
- As part of the agreement, Boyd Interactive obtained ResortsCasino.com and MoheganSunCasino.com, as well as one unused sports betting identity.
- Resorts Digital has outperformed the physical Resorts casino for years, earning almost five times more money since the beginning of the year.
Boyd finalizes Resorts Digital acquisition without revealing financials
Giannantonio said on Sept. 23 that the deal had been agreed upon earlier this year and finalized on Sept. 1. None of the two companies wanted to reveal the exact terms of the agreement.
According to a Bonus.com story, a regulatory document issued by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) says that Boyd and DGMB agreed to a deal on May 15, 2024.
As part of the deal, Boyd Interactive acquired the New Jersey online casino operations of ResortsCasino.com and MoheganSunCasino.com, along with one unused sports betting skin or online identity. The physical Resorts Atlantic City casino property remains in the possession of DGMB Casinos.
Online casino play at ResortsCasino.com and MoheganSunCasino.com will remain uninterrupted. Giannantonio stated that Resorts Digital will continue to operate under the online gambling and sports betting licenses held by Resorts Casino.
Resorts Casino will continue its relationship with its online gambling partners – DraftKings, Penn Gaming, PokerStars and ESPNBET.
The two companies will cross-promote one another
Giannantonio emphasized that Resorts will continue to promote the ResortsCasino.com brand on the casino’s physical premises. Likewise, ResortsCasino.com will advertise Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City to its online players.
According to the Associated Press, Giannantonio said, “This marketing relationship will benefit both companies in the long term.” He added:
“We are confident that this transaction will propel Resorts Digital’s proven success over the past decade to a new level through the scale of Boyd Interactive and its market-leading platform.”
Boyd Gaming used to be half-owner of Atlantic City’s Borgata casino. In 2016, MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) agreed to purchase Boyd’s 50% stake in the Borgata for $900 million in cash and assumed debt.
Boyd increases NJ online casino presence with Resorts Digital purchase
Boyd confirmed to Bonus.com that the acquisition of Resorts Digital is “consistent with Boyd Gaming’s strategy of building a profitable regional iGaming business integrated with our existing nationwide portfolio.”
“New Jersey has long been one of the nation’s leading iGaming states, and we look forward to further growing our presence in that state’s online gaming market in partnership with Resorts Casino in Atlantic City.”
Last month, the statewide industry reached a new single-month high. During August, New Jersey online casinos won $198.4 million from players, surpassing the previous single-month record of $197.2 million from March.
The NJDGE reports also reveal that Resorts Digital has earned five times more than the physical Resorts casino since the beginning of the year.
