The Colorado Lottery is transitioning to 1-800-MY-RESET, the National Council on Problem Gambling‘s (NCPG) new national gambling helpline, replacing references to 1-800-GAMBLER across its products, advertising and responsible gambling materials.
1-800-MY-RESET is a new nationwide problem gambling helpline, offering confidential support via phone, text and online chat.
Colorado Lottery starts helpline transition
“There has been a change at the national level, and the Colorado Lottery is making the change to remain consistent with our alignment with the National Council on Problem Gambling,” Tom Seaver, senior director of the Colorado Lottery, said in announcing the transition.
He added that players can continue using either helpline during the transition period.
The lottery said it will gradually replace references to 1-800-GAMBLER with 1-800-MY-RESET on lottery tickets, promotional materials and other communications over time.
The transition does not currently extend to all Colorado gaming agencies. The Colorado Division of Gaming previously instructed licensed operators to continue using 1-800-GAMBLER until further notice, and the state’s Bet Smart Colorado responsible gambling initiative continues to reference that number.
Lottery reinforces responsible gambling
In a news release, the Colorado Lottery said the transition reflects its broader commitment to responsible gambling.
The lottery employs a full-time Player Health Manager, making it one of relatively few US lotteries with a dedicated responsible gambling position.
It also holds the highest level of responsible gambling certification under the NCPG and North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries’ Responsible Gambling Framework, formerly known as the Responsible Gambling Verification program. In addition, the lottery previously earned Level 4 Responsible Gaming Certification from the World Lottery Association.
Since launching in 1983, the Colorado Lottery has returned more than $4.6 billion to Colorado through programs including:
- Great Outdoors Colorado
- Colorado Parks and Wildlife
- The Conservation Trust Fund
- Building Excellent Schools Today
- Outdoor Equity Grant Program
Trademark dispute changed national helpline
The transition stems from a trademark dispute between the NCPG and the CCGNJ.
The CCGNJ has owned and operated the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline since the 1980s. In 2022, it licensed the trademark to the NCPG under a three-year agreement that expired in May 2025. The organizations were unable to negotiate a new licensing agreement, leading to litigation.
Although the NCPG initially secured a temporary restraining order allowing continued use of the number, a New Jersey Superior Court ultimately ruled that the CCGNJ held exclusive rights to the 1-800-GAMBLER trademark, requiring the NCPG to discontinue its use.
The NCPG subsequently launched 1-800-MY-RESET in January as its new National Problem Gambling Helpline.
“Problem gambling support should never be limited to a single moment or a single definition of harm,” Derek Longmeier, president of the NCPG Board of Directors, said when announcing the new helpline. “Making the Helpline number easier to remember is a practical, meaningful step toward reducing barriers to care.”
NCPG Executive Director Heather L. Maurer added that the easier-to-remember number helps ensure people nationwide can quickly access confidential support whenever they need it.
