The launch of Ohio sports betting on Jan. 1, 2023, should be quite robust. On Wednesday morning, the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) approved more licenses for popular sportsbook operators and their service providers.
With the approvals, more sports betting apps could soon begin taking account registrations in Ohio. Additionally, three physical sportsbooks can ramp up their preparations for New Year’s Day.
Commissioners add to Ohio sports betting scene
Three more facilities in Ohio will be able to take bets from visitors on Jan. 1. The new recipients of licenses to open physical sportsbooks are:
- Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati
- HOF Village Newco (Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton)
- Miami Valley Gaming and Racing
The Commissioners also approved online sports betting licenses for five more operators. The licenses went to:
- BetMGM
- Crown OH Gaming (DraftKings)
- Seminole Hard Rock Digital
- Tipico Ohio
- RSI OH (BetRivers)
The OCCC also approved several service providers for licensure in the state during the meeting.
Vendor licenses get approval as well
The commission members approved an integrity monitor for sportsbook operator licensees on Wednesday, namely the International Betting Integrity Association. Sportsbooks use data the association compiles to guard against match-fixing.
Commissioners also approved four supplier licenses for various needs. Those included SBTech Malta Limited and Xpoint Services. Xpoint Services provides geolocation verification to ensure compliance with federal and Ohio laws while SBTech affords account management services.
Other sportsbooks which have already been approved in Ohio use these and similar services. Some sports betting apps, such as Caesars and FanDuel, have already begun accepting account registrations from prospective bettors in the state.
With these services in place, online sportsbooks should be ready to start accepting wagers on New Year’s Day. The operator license approvals mean bettors will have plenty of options to sample on that day.
