The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is partnering with high school sports booster clubs across the state to promote responsible gambling among youth. MGCB officials said the new initiative is designed to counter the growing volume of gambling content that young people encounter on social media, in sports broadcasts, and other channels.
How booster clubs can promote “Don’t Regret the Bet”
Under the new partnership, booster clubs are invited to promote the state’s “Don’t Regret the Bet” campaign by displaying responsible gambling messages during sporting events. Notably, the deal also includes the clubs’ community outreach channels.
Booster clubs that qualify for the program can promote the campaign messages in various ways, including:
- Game-day programs
- Scoreboard and stadium signage
- Social media posts
- Email newsletters
- Community events
- Fundraising activities
The clubs can earn up to $4,000 through the program, helping raise funds for school athletic programs. In addition to the financial gain, the initiative helps educate students and families about responsible gaming.
Executive Director Henry Williams said booster clubs are well-positioned for the task, noting they are deeply trusted in their communities. “Responsible gaming education isn’t just good practice — it’s critical for protecting Michigan’s youth in an era where betting content is everywhere,” Williams said in a PlayMichigan news post.
Addressing the rise of youth gambling exposure
Research by the MGCB found that one in six parents of teenagers is worried their children could be developing a gambling problem. This finding highlights the importance of early education and prevention. By infusing responsible gambling messaging into school sporting events, the agency hopes to start conversations about the risks of gambling before issues arise.
The agency said the program responds to growing concerns about young people’s exposure to gambling content. The initiative was recognized nationally in 2025, earning finalist honors in two categories of the PRNEWS Platinum Awards, one of the highest honors in public relations and communications.
Eligibility and grant application details
Booster clubs must meet certain requirements to qualify for the program. Most notably, they must be nonprofit and school-affiliated. Moreover, they must agree to display the campaign’s messaging during sporting events and other activities.
Applications are currently open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
