State of Play’s TL;DR

  • North Fork Mono Casino has opened in Madera, CA, with more than 2,400 slot machines.
  • The Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians is seeking a federal court order to halt gaming at North Fork Mono Casino.

North Fork Mono Casino has opened in California with more than 2,400 slot machines and 40 table games, even as a federal challenge to its gaming operations remains unresolved.

The project cost approximately $750 million. Casino.org reported that the property welcomed customers on Oct. 27, a day earlier than scheduled.

The casino is owned by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians and managed by Station Casinos, a subsidiary of Red Rock Resorts. It sits off Highway 99 near Madera in California’s Central Valley.

Federal challenge centers on gaming eligibility

Picayune filed its lawsuit in June, challenging the National Indian Gaming Commission’s 2024 approval of North Fork’s management agreement with Station Casinos. Picayune argues that the casino lacks the state concurrence required for gambling on the site under federal law.

California voters rejected legislation ratifying the project’s tribal-state gaming compact in a 2014 referendum. A state appeals court ruled in December 2025 that the referendum invalidated former California Gov. Jerry Brown’s concurrence with a federal determination permitting gambling on the off-reservation land. The California Supreme Court declined to review that ruling in April.

North Fork argues that federal approvals remain effective and points to gaming procedures issued by the Interior Department in 2016.

US District Judge Kirk E. Sherriff heard arguments on Oct. 9 on Picayune’s request for a preliminary injunction, and the defendant’s motions to dismiss, according to Casino.org.

Casino opens with dining and expansion plans

The property opened with eight dining venues and four bars. World Casino News reported that its separate High Limit Room includes 138 slots, 10 table games, a private bar, and a dedicated cashier.

More than 1,000 employees have been hired, according to World Casino News. The outlet also reported that casino revenue is expected to support social services for North Fork citizens and benefit the city and county of Madera under existing agreements.

Future development phases include a hotel, parking garage, entertainment center, and conference center.
