Mississippi online casinos could’ve won nearly $50 million in July
In an ideal gaming world, states would allow land-based and online casinos. However, that gambling utopia is a reality in just seven states.
Mississippi is one of the other 43 that don’t allow iGaming. Consequently, casino operators in the state are missing out on a massive revenue opportunity. Likewise, the state’s General Fund (where casino tax revenue goes) is missing millions.
As an example of the kind of revenue the state is missing from iGaming, PlayUSA predicts that Mississippi online casinos could’ve brought home $48.9 million in revenue in July (the most recent month in which all iGaming states reported revenue):
State | July online casino revenue | Population (according to 2023 Census Bureau data) | Per-capita revenue |
---|---|---|---|
Pennsylvania | $215.4 million | 13 million | $16.65 |
Michigan | $195.4 million | 9.3 million | $20.65 |
New Jersey | $191.4 million | 10 million | $19.86 |
Connecticut | $41.7 million | 3.6 million | $12.86 |
West Virginia | $20 million | 1.8 million | $9.94 |
Delaware | $6 million | 1 million | $3.90 |
Rhode Island | $2.6 million | 1.1 million | $2.09 |
Average | $96.1 million | 5.7 million | $16.86 |
Mississippi | $48.9 million | 2.9 million | $16.86 |
Taking the state’s base tax rate of 8% on all revenue above $134,000, online casinos could’ve generated $3.9 million in tax revenue in July alone.
Mississippi’s Central casinos lead August revenue growth
In Mississippi, revenue reports are split up into three regions: Central, Coastal, and Northern.
Coastal casinos bring in the most revenue per month, easily clearing $100 million. Northern casinos tend to stay in the $40 million range. Central casinos usually report between $20 and $30 million each month.
This past month, casinos in the Central region stole the show by posting a 10.6% increase in Mississippi casino revenue from July 2024. Northern casinos had a good month too: up 8.4% month-on-month.
Revenue from the Coastal region lagged 1.7% from July to August.
Year-on-year, revenue rose from $198.7 million to $208.7 million, good enough for a 5% increase.
