Maryland Casinos Show Slight Year-Over-Year Increase In June

Six Maryland casinos generated $163.7M in revenue from slot machines and table games, paying $69.4M in taxes during June 2023.

According to data from the Maryland Lottery and Gaming, six casinos in the state generated $163,717,230 in revenue in June. Revenue from slot machines and table games represents a 0.6% increase compared to June 2022.

However, the $163.7 million revenue figure is a monthly drop from the $169.4 million collected in May.

Maryland casinos contribute $69.4 million in state taxes

Casino gaming contributed $69,430,233 to the state in June 2023, a 1.6% increase from June last year.

Contributions to the Education Trust Fund in June 2023 were $50,433,185. The figure is a 1.5% yearly increase ($764,425). It brings the total contributions for that purpose to more than $250 million in 2023.

Casino gaming revenues also support:

  • The communities and jurisdictions where the casinos are located
  • Maryland’s horse racing industry
  • Small, minority- and women-owned businesses

MGM National Harbor remains the top Maryland casino

Maryland’s six privately owned casinos offer both slot machines and table games.

According to MLG’s June revenue report, the gaming revenue totals are:

  1. MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County: $69.0 million, a yearly increase of $632,428 (0.9%)
  2. Live! Casino & Hotel in Anne Arundel County: $57,98 million in June 2023, a 3.5% yearly increase ($1,979,637)
  3. Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore City: $15,94 million, a 6.5% yearly decrease (-$1,110,637)
  4. Ocean Downs Casino in Worcester County: $8,68 million, a 1.5% yearly increase ($125,524)
  5. Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County: $6,95 million, a 5.9% decrease year-over-year (-$433,399)
  6. Rocky Gap Casino in Allegany County: $5,12 million, a 4.1% decrease ($221,622) from June last year

June was not so prosperous for Maryland casinos

Maryland casinos had a great start to 2023, generating $167.3 million in January. Then, there was a slight revenue dip in February. The revenue continued to increase in the coming months until June.

  • February: $157.06 million
  • March: $176.52 million
  • April: $174.74 million
  • May: $169.40 million
  • June: $163.72 million
