I thought the Supreme Court made sports betting legal. So why can’t I bet on sports in Maine yet?
When the US Supreme Court struck down PASPA, it did not legalize sports betting. Rather, it opened the door for state-sanctioned wagering. Now it remains up to each individual state to authorize sports betting.
When will Maine legalize sports betting?
Maine was in scoring position with legislation to legalize sports betting in early 2020. Gov. Janet Mills, though, stuffed the bill at the goal line with a veto. And a House vote fell short of overriding the veto, thus killing the measure in its tracks.
It seems fair to assume Maine lawmakers will have another go at it in the near future. Among Mills’ reasons for vetoing was that Maine needed to watch surrounding states and how they approached the industry before moving forward itself.
Should I just bet with one of these online sportsbooks I see all of the time?
It’s up to the user, but we would suggest not to. These books are not legal or regulated in the state of Maine. As such, players aren’t quite sure whom they are dealing with and what kind of integrity surrounds these books.
Can I play fantasy sports for real money in Maine?
Yes. All major fantasy sports sites — including DraftKings and FanDuel — accept players from Maine.
