State of Play’s TL;DR

  • FanDuel experienced technical difficulties on Thursday night that temporarily blocked user access.
  • The company said the problem appears tied to an AWS outage. This affected app and web access for some bettors; FanDuel’s support team posted updates on X, saying they are working with its service provider to restore service and apologizing for the inconvenience.
  • AWS contacted PlayUSA after publishing to clarify that the outage was tied to a single Availability Zone and wasn’t a “widespread or global outage.”

Late Thursday, FanDuel users reported being unable to access the sportsbook and related services. FanDuel Customer Support initially posted on X that “our team is aware and investigating the current technical difficulties prohibiting users from accessing our platform.”

About an hour later, the account said the company was “closely working with our service provider to troubleshoot,” and later identified the disruption as linked to a broader global Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage.

FanDuel’s messaging focused on investigation and restoration rather than technical detail. No official timeline for a full recovery was provided in the posts. The outage highlights how cloud-provider failures can cascade to major gaming platforms that rely on third-party infrastructure.

AWS contacted PlayUSA after publishing to clarify that this was an operational issue limited to a “single Availability Zone in the US-East-1 Region.” This also wasn’t a widespread or global outage.

As AWS said in a statement to PlayUSA:

“Please refer to the AWS Health Dashboard for details and updates on the operational issue at one Availability Zone (AZ) in the US-EAST-1 Region.”

Timing of live bets could create disputes

An outage like this can mean missed bets, inability to cash out, or problems monitoring in-play wagers – particularly during high-volume events.

Operators may see short-term revenue dips and face customer service surges as users seek explanations and refunds. Regulators in state markets will be watching prolonged interruptions, since licensed operators must safeguard customer funds and meet playability requirements.

Affected bettors should keep records (screenshots, timestamps) of any wagers or transaction attempts and follow official FanDuel channels for status updates. While account balances are typically preserved, the timing of in-game or live bets can create disputes that may require customer support or regulatory follow-up.
