Foxwoods Resort Casino will mark 40 years since its first bingo hall opened with a July 4 celebration that includes a Guinness World Records attempt tied to a high-stakes bingo game.
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which operates Foxwoods, plans to host “Firecracker Bingo” inside its High Stakes Bingo Hall, where organizers say the event will feature more than $1 million in combined cash prizes and giveaways, including a headline jackpot game of $440,000.
The casino says the event is intended to commemorate the 1986 opening of its original bingo hall, which helped launch what later became Foxwoods Resort Casino in 1992.
The anniversary event will also serve as an official attempt to set a Guinness World Records title for the largest payout in a single bingo hall game.
From bingo hall to tribal gaming landmark
Foxwoods traces its origins to July 5, 1986, when the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation opened a bingo hall on sovereign land in Connecticut. Tribal leaders have long described the operation as a foundational step toward economic development and self-sufficiency.
Rodney A. Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, said the original bingo hall represented a pivotal opportunity for the tribe to build long-term economic stability. He described bingo as the catalyst for the broader success that followed.
Foxwoods grew from that initial operation into one of the largest tribal casino resorts in North America, with bingo remaining a symbolic part of its identity and early growth strategy.
“Firecracker Bingo” and Guiness record attempt
According to a Hartford Courant report, the anniversary event will take place inside the High Stakes Bingo Hall, a 30,000-square-foot venue that seats more than 2,200 guests. Organizers say doors will open at 6 a.m. July 4, with paper sales beginning at 9 a.m. at the Rainmaker Expo Foyer.
Warm-up Bingo games are scheduled to begin at noon, followed by the main jackpot game at 1 p.m. The casino says additional door prizes totaling $40,000 will be distributed throughout the day.
The $440,000 jackpot game will serve as the centerpiece of Foxwoods’ Guinness World Records attempt. The record category being pursued focuses on the largest payout in a single bingo hall game, subject to official verification.
Michael Empric, a Guinness adjudicator, is scheduled to oversee the attempt and confirm whether the payout qualifies under the organization’s criteria. ccording to Guinness World Records, record attempts must follow strict documentation and validation procedures before any title is officially confirmed.
Final confirmation of any record will not be made until the adjudication process is complete and all requirements are reviewed.
A Fourth of July celebration with historic roots
Foxwoods’ anniversary celebration coincides with Independence Day festivities across Connecticut, reinforcing the “Firecracker Bingo” theme.
Casino officials have framed the event as both a tribute to the tribal nation’s early efforts and a showcase of how far the gaming operation has grown since its beginnings nearly four decades ago.
