Legacy of Gems Blitzways is an experimental online slot from Play’n Go. Why? Because Legacy of Gems is the first online slot to feature the Blitzways mechanic. Play’n Go described it as “an innovative new slot mechanic that revolutionizes the way players win.”
I was excited to try out this feature. What did I think? Read on! My Legacy of Gems Blitzways review explains how the game works, and I’ll also discuss the key pros and cons.
First Impressions with Legacy of Gems Blitzways
My first impressions with this online slot were mixed. The game loaded quickly, and the rules were clear and simple. I was also excited to explore the Blitzways format for the first time.
However, I found the graphics underwhelming. The background is unsophisticated. I wasn’t particularly impressed by the symbols on the grid either. The best Play’n Go slots offer terrific graphics and dazzling animations, so I was slightly disappointed by the visuals.

Visuals and Presentation: 3/5
Legacy of Gems Blitzways features a 5-reel grid, which is flanked by simple magenta and gold pillars. There are simple clouds in the background, but the graphics look basic.
I found that surprising, as Play’n Go released this slot in 2025. The studio has lots of older games which offer far more sophisticated graphics.
The symbols didn’t appeal to me either. There’s nothing particularly innovative or exciting about the designs, which are gems and cards. I found the block display unattractive as well.
However, the visual effects are impressive. The disappearing symbols, cascading reels, and increasing multipliers are smooth, and this process is always exciting.
The Role of Sound: 3.5/5
There’s nothing particularly memorable about the Legacy of Gems soundtrack. It’s pretty soothing, with a soft flute and a stringed instrument complementing the fluffy clouds in the background.
A drumbeat also plays, and it ramps up during exciting moments. That helps to build up the anticipation and the tension each time the symbols disappear and new symbols cascade down in their place.
The sound effects during the bonus round are also pretty good. However, I prefer the soundtracks that accompany other Play’n Go slots, such as Reactoonz, Rich Wilde, and the Shield of Athena.
Gameplay Journey: 4/5
Legacy of Gems Blitzways has a medium to high volatility rate. As such, I was expecting to endure some prolonged losing streaks while chasing large wins. Here’s how my journey played out:
- I set my bet size to $2 per spin and began playing. After 20 minutes, I was down by more than $100, and I hadn’t managed to trigger the free spins round. That was a little disheartening. However, I persisted.
- On my next spin, I won $64.40, thanks to the cascading reels and progressive wild multipliers. Another losing streak ensued, before I won $19.20. I eventually grew accustomed to the streaky nature of this game. There were lots of punishing losing streaks, punctuated by strong wins.
- Each time you land a winning combo, the symbols disappear. They will also leave a wild symbol in their wake. New symbols then cascade down to replace the symbols that vanished. You’ll often find that you form several winning combinations from a single spin, thanks to the tumbling reels feature. The wild also has a progressive multiplier, which increases your winnings. It starts at 2x, and then goes to 3x on the next cascade, and so on. By the time you hit 5x or 6x multipliers, you can rack up large wins.
- After playing for an hour, I was down by $296.80. However, I then finally triggered the bonus round. That was a relief. I was awarded eight free spins. During this round, I earned another three free spins, taking my total to 11.
- All wilds are sticky during the bonus round, and you benefit from the same features as the base game – cascading reels and progressive multipliers. By the end of the round, a 26x wild multiplier was in place, and I earned $684.40. Coins began pouring onto the screen, and I was congratulated for securing a “Mega Big Win.”
- While it was frustrating to see my balance going down for an hour, winning it all back in one fell swoop was exciting. I decided to take a break and gather my thoughts on the game.
- Later that day, I played Legacy of Gems Blitz Megaways. This time I tried it out on my iMac, as opposed to my iPhone. The visual effects still looked slick on the larger screen, but the graphics remained a little basic.
- Once again, there were prolonged losing streaks, interspersed with some decent wins. For example, I won $92.20 on a particular spin. At one point, I was up by more than $380. However, the money I’d earned from the “Mega Big Win” was gradually eroded over the course of my second session.
- I was hoping to trigger the bonus round a second time, but I didn’t manage to, which was disappointing. After playing for 40 minutes, my total winnings had dropped to just $11.40. I gave up on trying to unlock the bonus round again and ended the session.
Bonus Features Through My Eyes: 4/5
This online slot only has one bonus round. However, you can benefit from cascading reels and multiplier wilds during the base game. I’ve discussed these features in the chart below.
Feature | Description | Impact on Gameplay |
---|---|---|
Multiplier wilds | If you secure a winning combo, the symbols will vanish. They will leave a wild on the grid. Meanwhile, if you secure a winning combo that features a multiplier, those symbols will also vanish. They’ll leave a wild with a 2x multiplier in their place. New symbols will then cascade down to replace the symbols that disappeared. The wild will help you form winning combinations. Each time you earn another win, the multiplier will increase. For example, it will go up to 2x, then 3x on the next cascade, 4x on the next cascade, and so on. The wild will then be removed if you don’t land a winning combo, and you can spin the reels again. | This is the best way to earn decent payouts when playing Legacy of Gems Blitzways. I was only playing for $2 per spin, but I often earned wins of between $50 and $100 from a single spin, thanks to this feature. I found it difficult to trigger the bonus round, so I was grateful for these wilds, with progressive multipliers. The cascading reels feature is also exciting. It’s great to rack up multiple wins on a single spin. That helped me stay motivated when playing this game. |
Free spins round | If you land three scatter symbols, you’ll trigger the free spins round. During this bonus round, you can win extra free spins. The maximum you can earn is 46 free spins. Wilds that appear during the bonus round will be sticky. That means they remain on the reels to help you form winning combinations on the Blitzways. You’ll also benefit from cascading reels and the wilds featuring progressive multipliers. | I only managed to trigger this free spins round once, despite playing for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Perhaps that’s to be expected on a medium to high volatility slot, but it was a little frustrating. I found myself wishing that Play’n Go had added a bonus buy option to the game. However, the bonus round proved lucrative when I unlocked it. I retriggered an extra three free spins, taking my total to 11. In total, I earned $684.40, which was 342.2x my bet size. |
Balancing Risk and Reward: 4/5
I can’t really complain, as I ended my session with a modest profit. However, I did endure lots of tough losing streaks. I was down by almost $300 at one point, but I then landed a big win during the bonus round.
A couple more strong wins followed, and I swung to a profit of more than $380. However, I ended up losing most of that, and I ended up just $11.40 in the black before ending my session. That highlights the volatile nature of this online slot.
I wouldn’t recommend this game for players that enjoy grinding out small, regular wins. Legacy of Gems Blitzways is better suited to players that like chasing large payouts. If you’re content to endure barren spells (and are willing to bet enough to be able to do so), the game can potentially prove lucrative.
Legacy of Gems Blitzways has an above average return to player (RTP) rate of 96.51%, and a maximum win of 20,000x your bet. That’s impressive for a slot with medium to high volatility.
The Good and Bad of Legacy of Gems Blitzways
I didn’t enjoy Legacy of Gems Blitzways as much as some of the other Play’n Go slots I’ve played. But it certainly has its strengths. This chart highlights the key strengths and weaknesses I uncovered.
- The Blitzways mechanic is interesting. I doubt it will prove as popular and revolutionary as Big Time Gaming’s Megaways feature, but it’s great to see Play’n Go experimenting with new formats.
- I enjoyed the cascading reels and wilds with multipliers. It was great to rack up substantial wins during the base game.
- The bonus round was terrific, as I retriggered an extra three free spins. The multiplier on the wild went up to 26x, which proved very lucrative.
- The graphics are underwhelming. Play’n Go plans to roll the Blitzways feature out on more slots, and I hope to see more sophisticated graphics on future releases.
- The soundtrack is pretty generic. It’s fine, but I’d prefer a more upbeat and engaging soundtrack.
- I found it very difficult to trigger the bonus round. I played Legacy of Gems Blitzways for 1 hour and 40 minutes, and I only triggered it once.
Final Thoughts on Legacy of Gems Blitzways
Legacy of Gems Blitzways is an interesting slot. The Blitzways format is engaging, as the reel heights change with every spin. That means the grid layout is constantly shifting, which unlocks new ways to win on each spin.
The bonus round is excellent, and the cascading reels and multiplying wilds really brighten up the base game too. However, I wasn’t blown away by the graphics or the soundtrack. I know it’s a volatile slot, but I was often frustrated by my inability to trigger the bonus round. I’d regularly see two scatters appear, only for the third to prove elusive.
I’m looking forward to playing future Blitzways slots from Play’n Go. This is a promising format, and it will be interesting to see how it develops. However, I won’t be in a rush to play Legacy of Gems Blitzways again, as I prefer Play’n Go slots like Tower Quest Legacy, Reactoonz, and Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead.
