After more than a month since Kansas sports betting has been legalized, the state released the first official revenue report.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly‘s office announced on Monday that the first month of legal sports betting saw sportsbooks generate a total of $1.3 million in revenue.
More precisely, four state casinos reported $1.29 million in sports betting revenue during September, generating $129,617 in sports betting taxes for the state.
Keeping Kansas sports betting money in-state
The Governor’s Office published a breakdown of sports betting revenue figures as of Sept. 30th.

Boot Hill Casino and its mobile partner DraftKings failed to post positive revenues because of the high volume of promotional credits handed out to players. The casino operator and its partner do not need to pay state taxes until receiving net positive revenues.
Speaking following the announcement, Gov. Kelly said:
“These revenues reinforce what we already knew: Legal sports betting is a common-sense solution that keeps Kansans’ money in Kansas and supports Kansas businesses. While legal wagering is just in its infancy, these revenues will continue to grow and benefit the state over time.”
Stephen Durrell, executive director of the Kansas Lottery, added:
“Sports betting has successfully kicked off in Kansas, and players could not be more excited to get in on the action. The launch went smoothly thanks to the efforts of our casino partners, the sports wagering platforms, the KRGC, and our staff at the Kansas Lottery. We will continue to work to make sports betting in Kansas safe, secure, and fun for all players as we expand and grow.”
Kansas bettors placed more than $2.4M in sports bets within first ten days
According to the Kansas Lottery, more than $2.4 million in sports bets were placed in the Sunflower State between Sept. 1 and Sept. 11. It resulted in over $47 million in winnings.
The Lottery said the most popular teams that players bet on were the Chiefs and Royals, as well as the in-state colleges of Kansas and Kansas State.
As Stephan Durrell said:
“Royals play a lot of games and so they are on TV a lot. A lot of times people will wager on their favorite team no matter how well they are doing.”
As soon as Kansas officially launched its regulated sports betting market, GeoComply had to block over 16,000 players from Missouri attempting to place sports bets.
Kansas sports betting has successfully kicked off
Gov. Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 84 legalizing Kansas sports betting on May 12, 2022.
Then, four months later, it led to one of the smoothest launches in US online gambling history. Kansas sports betting started on Sept. 1, when the Governor placed the first legal bet in the state. The full kickoff went live on Sept. 8. That launch happened just in time for the start of the 2022 National Football League Season.
With a strong sports culture, Kansas has already established itself as a profitable new US market. Its future is looking bright.
