3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win from Playson launched in 2024. It is a sequel to 3 Pots Riches: Hold and Win, adopting the same bonus round mechanic triggered by three gradually filling (and then overflowing) containers above the slot reels. The concept is mostly the same, only this time the action takes place underground, deep in the mines, where gold and other treasures await.
This slot runs on a 3×5 grid and offers 25 win-ways. It has a host of bonus features, more than most slots. Honestly, I had fun testing it. Here’s my detailed review of 3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win.

First impressions with 3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win
The good old Wild West is the first thing that comes to mind when you first open 3 Carts of Gold, thanks to its theme and soundtrack. Indeed, the slot gives the impression that there is much to be won, with all the jackpots and bonus features prominently displayed on the interface.
The game feels smooth when you get down to it. The reels move seamlessly on both desktop and mobile devices. That, combined with the sharp graphics and stunning visuals, makes the overall gameplay look and feel neat. It is the level of quality that you would expect from a developer as big as Playson.

Visuals and presentation | 4.5 / 5
Being a relatively new game from renowned developer Playson, the visuals in 3 Carts of Gold are exactly what I expected: spectacular. The theme is inspired by mining (the “Gold” in the title gives it away), and the game gives off Wild West, Gold Rush vibes.
The presentation is also on point with the theme. Most notably, the interface features three carts filled with gems sitting atop the grid. Moreover, the symbols are inspired by classic mining items like a lantern, shovel, kettle, and miner’s backpack. Interestingly, the Wild symbol is a smiling miner with a happy-go-lucky attitude.

Role of sound in 3 Carts of Gold | 4.0 / 5
The banjo soundtrack in 3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win got me in a jolly mood. It doesn’t become overwhelming after some time, as is the case with many slots. In fact, it makes the overall experience feel more immersive.
Gameplay journey in 3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win | 3.8 / 5
My gameplay journey in 3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win started off on a high note. Believe it or not, I unlocked the Bonus Game after only a few spins. However, I found my winnings to be quite moderate, which was a bit disappointing.
I was lucky to land a few wins in the rounds following the Bonus Game. However, I should mention that the wins felt few and far apart, reflecting the game’s medium-to-high volatility. The wins were also moderate, which isn’t what I expected. This is why I was especially surprised that I unlocked the Bonus Game so early!

I came quite close to unlocking the free spins, but it seems that I just couldn’t land enough Scatters. The Wild symbol also worked in my favor a few times. I also decided to try out the bonus-buy feature just to see how it works, and I’m sorry to say that it may not be worth the cost if you don’t land a decent jackpot prize.
Bonus features through my eyes | 4.0 / 5
The core bonus feature of 3 Carts of Gold, the Bonus Game, is one of the most complex ones I’ve come across. There are layers to how it works, including different types of rewards, including huge multipliers. Moreover, the jackpots only activate during the Bonus Game.
In addition to the Bonus Game, this slot also features several other exciting bonus options. They include free spins that regenerate when you collect enough scatters. There’s also a bonus-buy option that lets you unlock the core Bonus Game for 75x the bet amount.
| 💰 Feature/Bonus | Description | Impact on gameplay |
|---|---|---|
| ⛏️ Bonus Game | The game’s core bonus feature. It triggers when you land at least six bonus symbols or their combinations with gems. The feature awarded depends on the types of gems or carts that activated the Bonus Game. You get three re-spins, which can retrigger if you land more boosters. Moreover, you get a multiplier with values ranging from 1x to 12x. | Re-spins essentially let you play for free and create more opportunities to boost your wins. Moreover, multipliers boost your wins by up to 12x. |
| ⛏️ Boost Cart (Green gems) | If the Boost Cart is active during the Bonus Game, every green gem that lands takes on random multiplier values ranging from 2x to 10x, which apply to all symbol values on the grid. | Boosts your wins by up to 12 times. |
| ⛏️ Mystery Cart (Red gems) | If the Mystery Cart is active during the bonus game, every red gem that lands awards random multipliers with values ranging from 15x to 150x. | Boosts your wins by up to 150x. |
| ⛏️ Collect Cart (Blue gems) | If the Collect Cart is active during the bonus game, every blue gem that lands collects all symbol values from the reel and adds them to its value. | It boosts your winnings by random values. |
| ⛏️ Rainbow Gem | Depending on the cart feature active during the Bonus Game, every rainbow gem that lands converts into a green, red, or blue gem. | It boosts your winnings regardless of the gem’s color. |
| ⛏️ Jackpots | Jackpots can be triggered during the Bonus Game. There are four jackpot levels: Mini (15x), Minor (50x), Major (150x), and Grand (5,000x). | Triggering a jackpot unlocks an extra payout, which can be quite ‘grand’ depending on the level. |
| ⛏️ Bonus-Buy | Unlocks the Bonus Game for 75x your current bet amount. | Experience the potential of the Bonus Game, albeit at a price. |
| ⛏️ Free Spins | Three Scatter symbols trigger 8 free spins, and landing three more Scatters during the free rounds unlocks an additional 8 free spins. | Play more rounds for free while unlocking more opportunities for a potential win. |
| ⛏️ Wild | Wilds substitute for all other regular symbols and double the value of the winning combo. | Increase your chances of forming winning combos and boost your wins by 2x. |
Balancing risk and reward | 3.5/5
3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win can be quite risky, considering it has medium-to-high volatility. As such, I recommend keeping your wagers low to help stretch out your bankroll, as you may spin many times before landing a substantial win. Fortunately, the many bonus features can work in your favor if you’re lucky. However, I wouldn’t recommend purchasing the bonus-buy feature unless you can afford it, as you’re not guaranteed to unlock a jackpot or break even.
The good and the bad of 3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win
- Lots of bonus features, including a multi-layered Bonus Game core bonus feature.
- Huge multipliers going up to 150x based on various bonus features.
- Sharp graphics and an engaging theme, combined with an enjoyable soundtrack.
- Fast-paced action to keep you on the edge of your seat.
- Fixed jackpots going as high as 5,000x the bet amount.
- The bonus-buy feature doesn’t include free spins.
