A year ago, $5 million in iGaming revenue was fairy-tale-level optimism. 888 was running online casinos at the time. Revenue in June 2023 finished at $1.2 million.
The Delaware Lottery made a change, hiring seasoned US casino operator BetRivers to run the state’s online casinos and sports betting.
Since BetRivers took over in January, revenue has exploded. Before BetRivers, a $1.4 million month would’ve been the highest ever in the state. After BetRivers, Harrington Race & Casino alone earns $1.4 million in a good month.
How long will BetRivers run Delaware’s online gaming?
Delaware is one of just a small group of single-operator states—states with one operator running sports betting or, in Delaware’s case, online casinos.
Earlier this year, lawmakers tried to expand the number of DE sportsbook operators from one to six, with each casino allowed to hand out two licenses to sportsbook partners. However, the expansion bill never made it to the legislature floor.
If online sportsbook expansion is eventually passed, there may be a push to expand online casino operators, too.
