State of Play’s TL;DR
- Michigan gaming regulators seized suspected illegal gambling machines and cash from a Muskegon bar.
- No arrests have been made so far.
Michigan regulators say they seized suspected illegal gambling machines, gift cards, cash, and records from a Muskegon bar as part of an ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made, but the case underscores the state’s focus on unlicensed gambling activity.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board said it executed a search warrant at DJ’s Pub, 2064 Henry St. in Muskegon, with help from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office and the Muskegon Police Department.
According to the agency, investigators removed three suspected illegal slot-style gaming machines, $1,200 in gift cards allegedly used to pay winnings, $3,874 in suspected gambling proceeds, and related records.
Search warrant followed months of investigation
The MGCB said the case began after it received a tip in January alleging unlicensed gaming machines and payouts in cash and gift cards. Investigators then observed the machines in operation during multiple visits over the following months.
DJ’s Pub is operated by Star 8, Inc., according to the state. The MGCB also said the bar was previously the subject of a 2021 enforcement action by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for violations tied to illegal gambling on the premises.
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said in a statement:
“Illegal gambling machines operate with no oversight, no consumer protections, and no accountability.”
The MGCB said no arrests have been made, and the matter remains under investigation.
Michigan residents can report suspected illegal gambling to the MGCB’s 24-hour tip line at 1-888-314-2682. The agency also has a problem gambling helpline, 1-800-GAMBLER.
Michigan has a bustling online casino industry along with several retail casinos.
