Massachusetts casino revenue showed a monthly decrease in November. The total taxable gaming revenue for the month was $142.98 million.
That figure is an 8.26% decrease from October’s $155.8 million. During last month:
- Nearly $48.95 million came through retail and online sports betting, a 17.29% decline from October
- A little over $94.03 million came from Massachusetts’ three casinos, a 2.73% monthly drop
As a result, the state collected $36.06 million in taxes in November, with $26.2 million coming from the three retail locations.
Encore Boston Harbor accounts for 65% of total November revenue
As revealed, the total gross gaming revenue (GGR) for casino gaming, table and slots, was $94.03 million, of which:
- $32.08 million come from table games
- $61.95 million came from slots
The GGR for casino gaming, table and slots, represents a 2.73% decrease from MA’s October 2023 gaming revenue of $96.67 million. It is also the second-lowest monthly revenue total in 2023 after September.
Looking at individual properties, Encore Boston Harbor was once again the highest earner in November, with 65.33% of the total revenue. Here’s how it compares to the other two operators:
- Encore Boston Harbor generated $61.43 million in total ($27.86 million from table games and $33.57 million from slots)
- MGM Springfield took in $21.00 million ($4.22 million from tables and $16.78 million from slots)
- Plainridge Park Casino collected $11.60 million, all from slots
Both Encore Boston Harbor and MGM Springfield are taxed at 25%. Therefore, they contributed $15.38 million and $5.25 million in taxes, respectively. Meanwhile, Plainridge Park Casino is taxed at 49%, paying $5.68 million in taxes.
MA online sportsbooks brought in $48.6M in November GGR
As mentioned, Massachusetts sportsbooks generated $48.95 million in total GGR through retail and online sports betting last month. Eight online sportsbooks generated $48,576,131.14. The number is a 16.53% decrease from October.
The most successful operator was DraftKings, which took 54.37% of the revenue, and here’s how it compares to its competitors:
- DraftKings: $26,412,341.18
- FanDuel: $12,121,983.98
- Penn Sports Interactive: $5,709,434.17
- BetMGM: $2,994,989.95
- Fanatics: $690,298.46
- Caesars Sportsbook: $335,536.90
- WynnBet: $287,648.78
- Betr: $23,897.72
As a result, $9.8 million went towards the state taxes.
Meanwhile, the state’s three retail sportsbook licensees – Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino – collected $370,189.5 in taxable gaming revenue in November. The figure is a significant drop from October, with a 62.20% monthly decrease.
According to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s November 2023 revenue report, Encore Boston Harbor is the top performer in that segment too, with a revenue of $288,640.
