State of Play’s TL;DR
- The Virginia Lottery is spotlighting problem gambling resources and a 24/7 helpline for Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
- In partnership with the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling, the initiative centralizes tools and outreach to help Virginians play responsibly as wagering options expand across the state.
The Virginia Lottery, working with the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG), launched a dedicated section on its website for problem gambling resources, tools and best practices to mark Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
Virginia Lottery Executive Director Khalid Jones said:
“As gambling options have become increasingly prevalent in Virginia, we at the Lottery are working hard to promote healthy and informed play for those who choose to play.”
The Lottery is also promoting the Virginia Problem Gambling Helpline – 1-888-532-3500 — which is toll-free, confidential and available 24/7 via phone, text or chat.
Jones urged Virginians to use available resources.
“It’s very important that people take advantage of the resources available to Virginians who think they or a loved one may have a gambling problem.”
More support means more responsible gambling
The Lottery’s efforts make support more visible and accessible at a time when sports betting and gaming options are growing.
Practical benefits for bettors include quicker access to counseling referrals, self-help tools and a round-the-clock helpline for immediate support.
Operators and retail partners may see downstream effects: clearer guidance can reduce high-risk play, support responsible gambling compliance, and protect brand reputation.
More broadly, centralized resources help normalize responsible gambling practices – encouraging players to set limits, use self-exclusion where available, and seek help early.
