Viking Runecraft highlights

  • Amazing and varied bonus features that contribute to the theme
  • Unique level-up system makes for a novel gameplay experience
  • Top-notch graphics, artwork, and animation

Our time with Viking Runecraft was overwhelmingly positive. Play’n GO always brings slot games to the cutting edge, and this is no different. The bonuses and features were intriguing, and the base gameplay was fun. The high volatility meant we didn’t experience a lot of features because our session was relatively short. Bear this in mind if you like lots of smaller wins that keep you spinning; Viking Runecraft isn’t likely to scratch that itch.

How to play Viking Runecraft

At its core, Viking Runecraft is simple. To play, you click or tap the ‘Spin’ button. There are other ways to spin, but we’ll cover those in a section below. During the base game, look for clusters of five or more identical symbols.

Game rules

While playing online, select the “i” icon on the bottom left of the play area to see the rules. Viking Runecraft has many side rules and mechanics, so we recommend brushing up on them before you play the game.

The main side feature to keep in mind is the level system. The bottom right shows a grid with highlighted squares. Landing winning symbols that overlap with those squares and clearing a full pattern will level you up. When you level up, you get a blessing from one of the game’s four gods—Thor, Odin, Freya, or Heimdall. We’ll discuss those in more detail when we get to the Viking Runecraft bonuses.

How to read paylines

Viking Runecraft uses a cluster mechanic for its paylines. This means there aren’t set lines over which symbols must appear to earn you a win. Instead, any five identical symbols touching each other in a group (orthogonally—no diagonals) will result in a win. Look for grouped symbols on each spin.

Winning symbols will disappear, and new ones will fall into place for cascading wins.

Ways to spin

While playing Viking Runecraft, you can spin the reels in several ways. The first is the big green button with two circling arrows. This will spin the reels once, and you can repeat the step again. In between spins, you can change your wager by clicking the pre-populated numbers or by using the plus or minus symbols.

Alternatively, you can use the autoplay feature. This is the orange button with two circling arrows with a play button in the middle. When selecting autoplay, you must choose the number of spins (10, 20, 50, 75, or 100), when to stop autoplay (on any win or if you hit a bonus game/free spins), and other thresholds such as balance increases or single wins exceeded a set amount.

You can stop autoplay at any time. The feature doesn’t allow you to alter your stake in the midst of your automatic spins.

How Viking Runecraft works

The Viking Runecraft slot game has a plethora of symbols, and matching five or more in a cluster will trigger a win. The game also has all sorts of side features.

Leveling system

There aren’t any special symbols in Viking Runecraft. Instead, the game has a unique leveling system that adds an interesting layer of gameplay.

You start at Level 1, which makes you a “Journeyman.” Next to your level and title, you will see a grid with highlighted squares on it; these spaces are highlighted blue on the reels and then yellow once completed. Land winning combinations that overlap with those symbols to work toward a new level. When you complete the full pattern, you will achieve a new rank and earn a blessing from one of the game’s four Norse gods (more on them in the bonus section below).

This mechanic makes Viking Runecraft worth a try because it’s so different from what other slots offer. The rush of filling a pattern and leveling up is hard to beat.

Viking Runecraft bonus rounds

Slot bonus rounds are one of the biggest reasons players enjoy spinning the reels. Viking Runecraft ups the ante with a plethora of special features and bonus rounds.

Gift of the Gods

Gift of the Gods can trigger randomly during a game round. Depending on which god is present at the side of the reels when the feature is triggered, four results are possible. Here’s the breakdown.

  • Thor: creates between five and nine wild symbols
  • Odin: creates two groups of two wilds
  • Freya: creates wild symbols in four clusters until at least one win occurs
  • Heimdall: one wild is added to each row

Runes of Valhalla

When you win on a rune stone, you collect one, which becomes highlighted in the top right corner. Collect five different rune stones and complete the current pattern (i.e., level up) to trigger the Valhalla feature. Won runes activate winning spaces on a bonus wheel. Land on one to win a prize.

Charge of Destruction

The wheel charges as you log wins during a single game round. The Charge of Destruction unleashes when you win on 20 or more symbols in a single spin (including cascades). There are four possible Charge of Destruction features.

  • Fury of Fenrir: Four diagonal lines of symbols are selected. Two are eliminated, while the others transform into the same symbol.
  • Judgment of Jörmungandr: A chain of symbols is highlighted. Most of the highlighted symbols are destroyed, while those remaining transform into the same symbol.
  • Scorching of Surtr: Three symbols are selected; the surrounding symbols get destroyed while the selected symbols duplicate.
  • Lure of Loki: All instances of two different symbols are highlighted. One group is eliminated while the other transforms into the same symbol.

Ragnarök feature

If you trigger a Charge of Destruction by winning on 20 symbols and then win on an additional 20 symbols, the Ragnarök feature will begin. You will also trigger the feature if you win on 40 symbols without triggering a Charge of Destruction.

The Ragnarök bonus starts with a normal spin. When no more wins are available, a random Charge of Destruction will start. Each Charge will trigger one time. Once they’ve all been triggered, the bonus ends. Winning clusters can multiply by 2x, 3x, 5x, or 15x during this feature.

Viking Runecraft jackpot

While there are many fan-favorite jackpot slots out there, Viking Runecraft doesn’t have a progressive jackpot. However, it has multiple bonus features and unique mechanics make it worth a look anyway.
