Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome is a Colossal Reels video slot released by WMS in 2014. Although the game does not feature actual characters or images from the movie, it clearly pays tribute to Ridley Scott’s 2000 blockbuster starring Russell Crowe.
The slot’s visuals and audio cues illustrate the story of Spartacus, the subject of another Hollywood classic from 1960. The reels resemble Roman pillars, and you can constantly hear the crowd murmuring as if you were centerstage at the Colosseum. The graphics look decent for 2014, the game runs smoothly, and it’s easy to identify winning lines as they light up every time after a winning spin. Below, we’ll go into detail explaining the game’s Colossal Reels mechanic, payouts, and special features.

Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome main features
The main characteristic of the Spartacus video slot is its Colossal Reels mechanic. It features a massive 5×12 reel set that stands next to and spins parallel to the main 5×4 reel set. There are 100 adjustable paylines: 25 on the main reel set and 75 on the Colossal Reel. You can set the number of active paylines to 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100.
The two reel sets work independently for the most part. The only time they interact is when one of the columns on the main reel contains stacked wilds. Then, the symbol transfer feature triggers, and the corresponding column on the Colossal Reel set is also entirely covered in wilds.
The game’s four low-paying symbols represent card suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, which all pay the same. The mid-tier symbols are a sword and shield, a helmet, a lion, and a Roman guard. Finally, the two highest-paying symbols are one male and one female gladiator, each appearing as a stacked symbol (1×4 on the main reel set and 1×8 on the Colossal Reel). For a win, the symbols must line up in a 3-, 4-, or 5-of-a-kind formation across one of the active paylines.
There’s also a wild symbol that takes the shape of the game’s logo and a scatter or so-called Feature symbol represented by the Colosseum, which only appears on reels 1, 3, and 5 across both reel sets.
Bonus Round feature
Three or more scatter symbols across both reels trigger the free spins round. The number of scatters determines the number of free spins and the base prize.
- 3 scatters — 8 free spins and a prize worth 2x the total bet;
- 4 scatters — 12 free spins and a prize worth 5x the total bet;
- 5 or 6 scatters — 20 free spins and a prize worth 20x the total bet.
If three or more scatters appear during the round, they will add the corresponding number of free spins to the total.
The free spins round looks nearly identical to the base game, except the background is slightly different, and the music becomes more dynamic. The bet per line and the number of active paylines remain the same as during the spin that triggered the feature.
The only extra feature in the free spins round is the nudging wilds. When stacked wilds on the main reel set are only partially in view, they will “nudge” into place, covering the entire reel. This works in conjunction with the symbol transfer feature we touched upon earlier, meaning that the stacked wilds from the main screen will transfer to their corresponding Colossal Reel.
Final thoughts
We had fun playing Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome while conducting this review, and we believe most online slots players will as well. You can play free online slots as well. The game still looks and sounds good a decade after its original release, all while staying true to the Gladiator theme.
More importantly, it’s not the same old boring 5×3 slot with simple, unimaginative features. The Colossal Reel and symbol transfer add more winning opportunities and can help create massive combos.
That said, the game’s bonus round is a bit underwhelming. It plays nearly identically to the base game. While the nudging wilds feature is appealing and can potentially create very rewarding scenarios, it alone doesn’t make the free spins game all that more enjoyable. Still, we recommend giving Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome a shot and deciding whether it’s the game for you.
