Inside the numbers of betting on the Super Bowl

The Los Angeles Rams started as a -1 favorite over the New England Patriots in most Nevada sportsbooks when Super Bowl 2019 lines were first posted. That changed quickly as money and bets came pouring in on the Patriots.

The Patriots quickly moved to a -2.5 favorite over the Rams. Sportsbooks are seeing heavy Patriots action. As of January 23, 73 percent of the point spread wagers on the Super Bowl at MGM Resorts casinos was on the Patriots. However, 96 percent of the point spread money on the Super Bowl at MGM Resorts are on the Patriots.

The money is so in favor of the Patriots that MGM Resorts has received nine wagers for $10,000 or more.

More betting facts involving the Patriots, Rams and the Super Bowl:

  • The New England Patriots regular season record of 11-5 straight up. However, they were only 8-6 against the spread.
  • The Los Angeles Rams had an even larger disparity between their on-the-field record and against-the-spread record. The Rams were 13-3 straight up in 2018 regular season. They were a woeful 5-7-2 against the spread. The Rams were 1-5-1 ATS when facing playoff teams during the regular season.
  • Despite the lackluster records against the spread, both the Patriots and Rams were 2-0 against the spread in the playoffs.
  • Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is 5-3 in Super Bowl appearances. The 41-year-old is the favorite to win Super Bowl MVP according to DraftKings Sportsbook at +110.
  • All eight Super Bowls featuring Brady and coach Bill Belichick have been decided by one score. On a related note, they’re 3-5 against the spread in those games.
  • The Rams last reached the Super Bowl in 2002, when they lost as 14-point favorites against Brady and the Patriots.
  • The only other time Brady and the Pats were Super Bowl underdogs was in 2014 against Seattle (a Pick ‘Em game). Last year, they were 4.5-point favorites against the Eagles.

Ways To Bet On The Super Bowl

Betting against the spread is the most common way to bet an NFL game. Sportsbooks set the line and you can either take the favorite laying the points or the underdog receiving them.

Last year, the New England Patriots opened as -5.5 point favorites over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Patriots would have needed to win by six points to cover the spread and to win that bet. Of course, the city of Philadelphia will remind you that it was not the case.

Another popular way to bet on a football game is to take the moneyline. Similar to betting the spread, you pick one team to win the game. However, this time there are no points involved.

With a spread of -5.5, the Patriots moneyline would be around -255 and the Eagles +215. You would need to wager $255 to win $100 betting on New England, whereas a $100 bet on Philadelphia would net a gain of $215.

If picking a side isn’t necessarily your thing, you could always opt to bet on one of the game’s totals. The most common total to bet would be the game’s over-under. Instead of worrying about which team is winning, the only concern you have for an over-under bet is the number of points scored in the game.

Last year, the Super Bowl line was 47.5 points. By taking the under, you’re betting that both teams’ scores total will be less than the line. The over means you’re betting the game’s total will exceed the figure. With a final score of 41-33, the over backers won their bet quite easily.

Team Totals

Another type of total focuses on each specific team. Most sportsbooks offer what’s called a “team total.” In this form of the wager, you’re once again betting on if there will be more or fewer points than the set number, but this time, just for one team.

This way, if you’re confident in one side’s offense, you can choose to bet the over on that team’s total as opposed to the game’s total. It allows you to remove a team from the equation.

Both the Eagles and Patriots went over their set team totals a year ago.

Straight Bets

The most common way to make any wager is with a straight bet. As simple as its name, a straight bet is a single bet where a win or loss determines the outcome. The odds are set on the one bet placed.

A more complex bet is a parlay which consists of at least two separate wagers strung together. To win a parlay bet, one must win every part, or leg, of the parlay. If you have a parlay with five legs and four results win and one loses, the bet loses the same as if you went 0-5.

The reason bettors like parlay bets is because they pay out much better than a straight bet. The number of legs and the individual odds of each of the legs determine the odds.

In the same regard, you don’t need to risk much to have a chance at winning big. A small $10 bet on most parlays of three or more teams could easily net hundreds.

Prop bets in Nevada and what you can’t bet on legally

Only about half of the wagers on the Super Bowl are on a team to cover the point spread or over/under the total. The other half of Super Bowl wagers will be on prop bets. Nevada sportsbooks will offer close to 1,000 prop bets on the Super Bowl.

While bettors will see plenty of unique legal betting opportunities, there won’t be any outlandish prop bets. Though offshore sportsbooks (operating illegally in the US) offer these, it is recommended that bettors place wagers through legal online or land-based sportsbooks. The Nevada Gaming Control Board requires sportsbooks to only offer wagering opportunities on events that happen on the field and can be confirmed through official sources like

Offshore sportsbooks can offer any kind of Super Bowl prop bets. That’s where bettors will find prop bets on the National Anthem, Halftime performance, and the color of Gatorade that will be poured on the head of the winning coach.
