Empire City Casino history and current owners

Empire City Casino was built on the site of the historic Yonkers Raceway, which dates back to 1899. In the early 2000s, the owners decided on a $225-million renovation that brought 7,500 slot machines to the raceway’s new gambling facility.

The casino had a soft opening in October 2006 with “only” 1,870 operating machines, while the next phase began in December, adding more than 2,000 machines and extending the gambling space by 120,000 square feet. Another renovation and expansion took place in 2013, bringing in more games and a couple of restaurants. The venue added electronic table games in 2015.

In 2018, MGM Resorts bought the casino for a reported $850 million. It remains the owner and operator of the establishment.
