Can I play with players in other states?
Yes, you can play poker with players in other states. Michigan joined the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA) in 2022.
Delaware and Nevada online poker regulatory bodies established the interstate gaming compact in 2014, and New Jersey joined in May 2018. Michigan was the fourth state to join, allowing online poker players in the Great Lakes State to compete against players in other member states.
PokerStars became the first site to take advantage of this development when it began pooling players across Michigan and New Jersey. WSOP then combined its online poker player pools in Michigan, Nevada, and Nevada in 2024.
West Virginia has now joined MSIGA too, and Pennsylvania may jump on board at some point in the future. That would provide Michigan’s online poker market with a shot in the arm.
Potential online poker sites
PartyPoker may eventually launch in Michigan. That site is live in New Jersey, where it pools players with sister sites BetMGM Poker and Borgata Poker.
Entain and MGM Resorts International are unlikely to launch Borgata Poker in Michigan, as it does not have much brand recognition outside of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. However, PartyPoker could eventually expand into Michigan. BetMGM Poker MI operates on the PartyPoker US network, and PartyPoker MI could also do so.
GG Poker is another potential candidate to launch a Michigan online poker room. The brand is vying for supremacy with PokerStars on a worldwide basis, and management has previously suggested that it will expand into the regulated US market. We will update readers if the site goes live in the Great Lakes State.

Underground poker rooms and unregulated poker sites in Michigan
You may find underground poker rooms in Michigan. However, they are unlicensed, so you will not benefit from any consumer protection laws if you play at them. There is also the risk that they will be busted, so they are best avoided.
Certain unregulated poker sites may also try to target Michiganders. The Michigan Gaming Control Board issued the Curaçao-based company that owns Bovada and Ignition Poker with a cease-and-desist letter in 2024, so those sites no longer accept players in Michigan.
However, other unlicensed poker sites based overseas still tout themselves to players in Michigan. They should also be avoided, as they do not fall under the jurisdiction of state or federal authorities, and you cannot rely on them to treat you fairly, keep your data safe, or pay out when you win.
Final thoughts about online poker in Michigan
Michigan already boasts the largest regulated online poker market in the United States, but there is a great deal of potential for future growth. Joining the MSIGA in 2022 was a game-changer, and online poker’s popularity has soared after PokerStars and WSOP began sharing player pools in Michigan with those in New Jersey and Nevada.
Pennsylvania is the largest state to legalize online poker, but it has not yet signed up to the MSIGA. If Pennsylvania joins, the traffic and liquidity at sites like WSOP and PokerStars should improve significantly, which would provide players with more options.
We could then see additional poker sites launch in Michigan, creating a more open and competitive market, with more attractive poker bonuses and larger guaranteed prize pools.
