Kansas Online Casinos

Written by

Online gambling is a bigger part of life in Kansas than you might expect. You can bet on sports and horse races and play daily fantasy sports contests legally in the Sunflower State, all online. At this time, however, the prospects for casino players who want to save themselves a trip to a retail gambling location and play online casinos are rather limited.

We are committed to being among the first to know if Kansas lawmakers make a move toward legalizing online casinos. Read on for all the latest, and check back for updates.

Kansas online gambling laws

If you want a snapshot about your legal online gambling options in Kansas right now, consult the table below.

Are online casinos legal in Kansas? No. State law makes it illegal “to play on a gambling device,” and there is no indication that any exception exists for online casinos.
What online gambling options do I have?Sports betting, social/sweepstakes casinos, horse betting and daily fantasy sports.
Can I gamble at casinos in Kansas?Yes. Kansas is home to four commercially owned casinos and six tribal casinos. Several of the properties, such as the Kansas Star and Hollywood Casino at Kansas Raceway, feature more than 100,000 square feet of gambling space.
How old do I have to be to gamble online in Kansas?Either 18 or 21. Sportsbooks require patrons to be 21, while DFS, horse betting and social/sweepstakes sites generally require their customers to be just 18.

How does Kansas regulate gambling?

Gambling in Kansas falls under the oversight of the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. There are few forms of legal gambling in the state that are not subject to the commission’s oversight, including commercial casinos, sportsbooks and their apps, online horse betting and daily fantasy sports. The lone major exception is the Kansas Lottery, which maintains oversight over its own products.

Interestingly, all of the commercial casinos in Kansas are operated, in part, by the state itself. The Kansas Lottery is the official operator at each location, but it maintains partnerships with outside companies to assist with the operations themselves. Thus, in a sense, all of the commercial casinos in Kansas are government buildings, though still subject to Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission oversight.

However, one group that falls outside the KRGC’s gaze is the tribal casinos in the state. Because reservations and the tribes that live on them have a degree of sovereignty, each tribe’s gambling commission oversees its own properties. So, if you get into a dispute with one of the gambling operators, you’ll need to get in touch with the KRGC or the tribal commission associated with your choice of casino. The good news, though, is that the regulator should have the resources to help you.

Kansas online casino and gambling updates

Online casino gambling in Kansas

With online casinos still not legally available in Kansas, the options for legally playing online casino games through your laptop or mobile device are slim. Kansas lawmakers have made attempts in the past to argue that online casinos and gambling falls under the existing definition of gambling under state law, but those efforts have not borne fruit or gained much traction.

Instead, the best options for Kansans to bet without leaving their couches, coffee shops or car seats are the social and sweepstakes casinos that are active in the state. Online social casinos like Pulsz, Chumba Casino and Funzpoints offer slots and a few other options like blackjack and roulette. Although they offer the option to play for free, they are structured so that it is possible to win cash prizes without paying a dime.

Kansas online poker

There are no legal online poker sites in Kansas at this time. However, Global Poker is a sweepstakes poker site for poker players that is virtually indistinguishable from a real online poker room and allows you the option to play for the potential to win cash prizes.

Kansas daily fantasy sports

Kansas was one of the first states to legalize DFS and codify its authorization into law. Then-Gov. Sam Brownback signed off on the legislation in 2015.

Kansas sports betting

Sports betting is available in Kansas through both retail and online books, which began opening for business in the state in early September 2022.

Kansas online horse betting

Kansans can legally bet on horse races online. However, top horse betting site TVG does not serve the state at this time, so your experience may vary.

Kansas Lottery

The Kansas Lottery is a mainstay in the state as one of the main options for gambling. However, the lottery commission does not sell or redeem tickets online.

Kansas retail casinos

The best option for most Kansans to play casino games is the state’s 10 casino locations. These facilities vary in size and offerings, from small slots-only venues to full-service resort locations. If you’re thinking about trying one of them out, here are some basic details:

Responsible gambling resources

No matter the type of online gambling you do in Kansas, if you’re responsible, it’s probably no worse for your time and money than going to a movie or a fancy restaurant. Unfortunately, some Kansans gamble to an unhealthy degree. Thankfully, there is help available for problem gamblers in Kansas.

The best resource for those who are unable to gamble responsibly is the Kansas Responsible Gambling Alliance. This organization is the state affiliate of the National Council on Problem Gambling and offers no-cost treatment options to problem gamblers and their families. You can either visit www.ksgamblinghelp.com to find out more information or call the Kansas Problem Gambling Helpline to be connected with a trained counselor who can help direct you to the appropriate treatment facility.

The other major resource for problem gambling help in Kansas is one or more of the many support groups in the state. These groups offer weekly meetings in many locations. Find the meetings nearest to you through these links:

    • Gam-Anon — A peer support group for families and friends of problem gamblers.
  • Gamtalk — A 24/7 discussion forum for problem gamblers.

Kansas gambling history

Kansas has a long and storied history with regard to gambling. Tales of Old West saloons and gambling in places like Dodge City loop prominent figures like Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson into the state’s narrative.

However, Kansas went through a period of gambling inactivity in the early part of the 20th century. Until the introduction of bingo in 1974, no legal gambling was available in the state. Subsequent moves in 1986 and 1987 made the lottery and horse/dog racing available, but the first casino did not appear until 1995.

That first casino, the Golden Eagle, was one of six tribal gambling locations that would eventually open their doors in Kansas. The Kansas Legislature authorized four commercial casinos in 2007, and with the introduction of sports betting in 2022, the state has become a surprisingly fruitful option for residents and visitors who would like to place a wager.
