  • Bonus code: FREE2500
  • Featured game: Capital Gains
  • What we liked: The mobile app outperforms the competition on Android and iPhone
  • What we didn’t like: Inconsistent promotions and bonus offers depending on state

Caesars Palace Online Casino has a reputation for offering the largest online casino bonuses in Michigan. The sign-up offer is worth up to $2,500 in bonus credits, and there are lots of recurring bonuses for Michiganders to claim each week.

It has a smaller range of games than BetMGM, but this mobile casino app may be more suitable for beginners in the Great Lakes State. The Caesars interface is neat and easy to navigate, so you should have no trouble finding your favorite types of games. The selection caters to all budgets, with everything from penny slots to VIP table games.

Caesars Palace also offers the best customer service in Michigan. You can speak with a member of the team 24/7 via live chat or over the phone, and email support is available, too. BetMGM is the best online casino in Michigan. It boasts the state’s largest online game collection with more than 1,500 titles. BetMGM online casino also provides a wide array of virtual table games, video poker games, live dealer games, and a variety of games.

This giant, well-curated library has helped BetMGM emerge as the market leader in Michigan’s online casino sector. It accounted for around 44% of the total handle in 2023, according to official figures from the Michigan Gaming Control Board, comfortably ahead of FanDuel and DraftKings.

BetMGM runs an in-house network of progressive jackpot slots, including MGM Grand Millions and Bison Fury. Its market-leading position ensures that lots of players contribute to the jackpot pools, allowing BetMGM to offer the largest jackpots in the state regularly.

The app is not quite as quick and accessible as the FanDuel Casino app, but BetMGM leads the way in terms of game variety and game quality. It also offers competitive bonuses, a strong rewards program, reliable payouts, high betting limits, 24/7 customer service, and lots of exclusive games.

  • Bonus code: None - Use Links
  • Featured game: 777 Strike
  • What we liked: Access to the sportsbook
  • What we didn’t like: We’re not fans of the play-it-again style of bonus

FanDuel provides the most user-friendly casino app in the state. The app has a better average user rating than rival MI casino apps on Google Play and the App Store. The mobile platform is smooth, reliable, and intuitively laid out.

This online casino cannot compete with rivals such as BetMGM and BetRivers in terms of game variety. However, the range is continually growing, and FanDuel has started adding more exclusives to the portfolio. It would be great to see more progressive jackpot slots introduced in the future.

FanDuel’s welcome bonus is pretty competitive. It does not have a loyalty program, whereas all of its main rivals in Michigan have comprehensive rewards programs. However, it does allow you to spin the Reward Machine three times per day in a bid to win up to $2,000 in casino credits. Payouts are quick, too, and there are lots of options.

  • What we didn’t like: Customer service is not available 24 hours via phone or e-mail

BetRivers offers the quickest payouts in Michigan. Its automated system, RushPay, approves more than 80% of withdrawal requests immediately. You will then receive your money straight away if you use Play+ or PayPal.

It also hosts a larger range of games than all rivals except for BetMGM in Michigan. The main lobby is very busy, with lots of sections. You’ll find new releases, this week’s top 10 slots, seasonal slots, featured games, live dealer games, hot games, bonus buy slots, Jackpot Royale slots, daily cash drop games, and many more options. These categories make it easy to find new games you might enjoy. Many of the games are exclusives, too.

The welcome bonus at BetRivers is not particularly appealing when compared with those at rival MI online casinos. However, BetRivers provides plenty of additional bonuses for existing customers, along with a strong loyalty program, iRush Rewards, plus daily bingo games.

DraftKings Casino is a great option for casual players, with its minimum deposit of just $5 and minimum withdrawal of $0.01. Many of the online casino games are also playable from $0.01. This online casino should appeal to high rollers, too, as you can make unlimited deposits and withdrawals via a wire transfer, and there is a VIP program for high-stakes players. Michigan casino app rankings: top to bottom

Michigan state law permits a maximum of 15 Michigan online casino apps. Each of the state’s 12 federally recognized tribes can host a single casino app on its master license, and so can each of the three commercial casinos in Detroit.

That means there is no room for any newcomers to enter the market. The only option for entry would be to take over an existing operator, as was the case when Fanatics purchased PointsBet.

These are the casino apps in Michigan and the ratings earned on the App Store and Google Play. Some reviews are for standalone casino apps, but a few operators have just one app for sports betting and online casino gambling. The BetMGM Casino app is currently the #1 online casino app in Michigan, with an average rating of 4.5 across both stores.

Where to play online casino games in Michigan

The best online casinos in Michigan offer a large variety of real money online casino games. These are the main categories, followed by each category’s top Michigan casino app.

Online slots in Michigan

Michigan online casino players have plenty of options when it comes to online slots and jackpot slots. This includes the basic three-reel slots with simple graphics to 3D slots with Megaways paylines and dazzling bonus features.

BetMGM is the best Michigan online casino for slots, with approximately 1,500 titles and dozens of themes in its collection. This online casino hosts lots of high RTP slots, such as Blood Suckers and White Rabbit Megaways, along with a range of exclusive progressive jackpot slots offering large prizes.

Online blackjack in Michigan

Blackjack is a popular table game with a very high RTP rate. You can play classic six-deck blackjack at the leading casino apps in Michigan, along with single-deck and double-deck games. Michigan online casinos also offer variants like Blackjack Xchange, Zappit Blackjack, and Blazing 7s blackjack, plus multi-hand blackjack.

DraftKings has the best Michigan casino app for playing real money blackjack. It hosts a large variety of exclusive games, plus the chance to win large payouts through the progressive jackpot system.

Online roulette

You can play European and American roulette at the top online casinos in Michigan. A European roulette wheel only has a single zero, giving it a significantly better RTP rate than an American wheel. Some operators offer French roulette, which has an even higher RTP than European roulette, along with games like Space Invaders Roulette and Double Bonus Spin Roulette.

FanDuel is the best online casino for roulette players in Michigan. It offers French, European, and American roulette games, along with First Person Lightning Roulette, Deal or No Deal Roulette, and Double Bonus Spin Roulette.

Other table games

Other table games can include baccarat, craps, and poker-style games, such as Let It Ride, Casino Hold’em, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, I Luv Suits, Texas Hold’em Plus, and Mississippi Stud.

DraftKings is the best MI online casino for table games. There are loads of poker-style games and baccarat options, along with exclusive craps games and virtual Sic Bo and Andar Bahar options.

Video poker

Video poker games mimic the machines found at land-based casinos. They are different from virtual table poker games and typically have their own section of an online casino in Michigan. Most top Michigan online casinos have excellent video poker options.

Live dealer games and studios in Michigan

These games allow you to connect with an actual dealer via video stream. You can chat with the dealer and watch as they deal the cards or spin the wheel in real-time. Live dealer games include roulette, blackjack, baccarat, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Three Card Poker, craps, and game shows.

There are two suppliers of live dealer games in Michigan. Most online casinos source their games from Evolution Gaming’s studio in Detroit, but Playtech has a rival studio supplying some Michigan online casinos with live casino dealers.

DraftKings is the best online casino for live dealer play in Michigan. It has a large range of games from Evolution, with high limits and progressive jackpots. Plus, the streams are always reliable.

Variety games

These games cannot be categorized as slots or table games. They include bingo, keno, online scratchcards, crash games, Slingo games, virtual sports, and other arcade-style games. Michigan online casinos do not have as many variety games as their counterparts in New Jersey, but you can find a reasonable selection at certain sites.

Once again, DraftKings Casino stands out with a strong range of scratch games, Slingo and LuckyTap titles, exclusive crash and keno games, and games of skill.

Payment methods at online casinos in Michigan

The best online casinos in Michigan allow you to make instant deposits via various convenient methods. The casinos do not charge any deposit fees and offer broad payment limits.

The minimum deposit is usually $10 in Michigan but can be as low as $5 at a couple of online casinos. The upper limit will vary according to the method selected. Many casinos do not have an official maximum deposit amount, so high rollers should contact the customer service team to discuss the best option for a large payment (often a wire transfer).

You will find a list of available payment methods when you visit the online cashier section of any Michigan online casino. These are the potential options.

How we reviewed the apps

We downloaded each legal casino app in Michigan, signed up for an account, and spent hundreds of hours playing games. This first-hand experience of the user interface, platform reliability, game quality, bonuses, and payment process informed our reviews. In the sections below, we’ll break down those criteria further.

The best Michigan online casinos offer a smooth user interface. Pages are clean and uncluttered, and the games are divided into lots of different categories and sub-categories, with plenty of shortcuts and filter tools to help speed things up. They also offer value-added online casino gaming features, such as exclusive games, in-house jackpot systems, free-to-play games offering prizes, and so on.

Finally, we played a large selection of games on each app to see if there were any glitches or crashes. Our list of the best Michigan online casinos proved to be very reliable in this regard.

Why choose a Michigan online casino

The Michigan online casino industry has two compelling options to play. First, you can visit one of the state’s land-based casinos. There are three commercial casinos and 23 tribal casinos offering online casino gaming operated by 12 federally recognized tribes. Alternatively, you can play at one of the 15 online casinos in Michigan. These are some of the pros and cons of online gambling and retail.

Online CasinoRetail Casino
✅ It is convenient to play casino games online, as you can pick up your iOS or Android device and dive straight in at any time.✅ Some players prefer the buzz and sociability of visiting a land-based casino.
✅ It is generally more cost-effective to play casino games, with lower table limits and minimum bets.❌ Brick-and-mortar casinos can offer a strong visitor experience, but they are not always convenient to visit.
✅ You can play casino games at your own pace in the comfort of your own home.❌ You may not be able to get a seat at the table you want, and your favorite slot may be occupied.
✅ Online casinos offer a greater variety of casino games, as there are no space constraints. The range of games varies significantly, as some have thousands of slot machines, and others are more basic.
✅ You can play casino games for free in demo mode, giving you the chance to test them out before playing for real money.❌ There are no free-to-play games, but some retail casinos will bring you free drinks.
✅ Online casinos offer a wide range of bonuses, as they need to work hard to attract players in a competitive market.❌ You will not generally receive bonuses at a retail casino.
✅ Some online casinos offer instant payouts✅ You can cash out your chips instantly at the cage, but it is advisable to stay vigilant if carrying a large sum of money.

Tip for Michigan players: Only play at legal online casinos that hold a license from the Michigan Gaming Control Board. That is the only way to guarantee that the games are fair and accurate. You will also be assured of a payout when you win, and you have options if games malfunction, which is not the case with unlicensed casino sites.

Michigan online casino and local partnerships

There are three commercial casinos and 12 federally recognized tribes in Michigan. Each is permitted to host one online casino on its master license, meaning there can be no more than 15 casino apps in the Great Lakes State. These are the casinos and their online partners.

How online casino regulation works in Michigan

As mentioned earlier, Michigan state law stipulates that there can only be 15 regulated online casinos. The first online casinos and sportsbooks launched in January 2021 after gaining approval from the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

The Michigan online casino industry requires a $50,000 application fee and an initial five-year license fee of $100,000 for entry. The operator is then required to pay an annual renewal fee of $50,000 to maintain its license.

Michigan online casinos must pay a minimum revenue tax of 20%. That goes up to 28% for the highest-grossing casino apps. This revenue goes toward public services, first responders, schools, and compulsive gambling treatment services. Three online casinos are tethered to commercial casinos in Detroit, and 30% of the tax revenue they hand over goes to the city of Detroit.

Number of online casinos15
Legal age21+
Tax on online casinos20% to 28% depending upon revenue
Where non-tribal taxes go65% to Internet Sports Betting Fund, 30% to the city of Detroit, 5% to Michigan agriculture equine industry development fund
Where tribal taxes go90% to Internet Sports Betting Fund, 10% to Michigan State Fund
Internet Sports Betting FundBeneficiaries include First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund, School Aid Fund, Compulsive Problem Gambling Fund

Note: The revenue tax paid by online casinos is different from personal tax liabilities for gamblers in Michigan. You will need to pay tax only if you end the year with an overall profit from all gambling activities. If so, the state income tax is 4.25%, and your tax bracket determines the federal income tax you need to pay.

How is Michigan different from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia?

  • Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania account for more than 88% of online casino revenue in the United States, according to the American Gaming Association. Those three markets are all similar in size despite Pennsylvania having a larger population than Michigan.
  • New Jersey’s legal online casino market began in 2014, seven years before Michigan rolled out legal casino apps. However, the Great Lakes State has already caught up.
  • There are almost 30 legal online casinos in New Jersey and 19 in Pennsylvania, so players in those states have more options at their disposal. However, the same operators—BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, Golden Nugget, Caesars Palace, and BetRivers—dominate all three markets.
  • New Jersey has more licensed online casino game suppliers than any other state, so NJ casino apps tend to carry the biggest game libraries. However, Michigan is not far behind, and it has far more licensed suppliers than Pennsylvania, perhaps because the licensing fees are lower.
  • West Virginia has a smaller market than Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with just nine licensed casino apps. The online casinos in the Mountain State have a significantly smaller range of games than those in Michigan.

Responsible gambling in Michigan

  • Each online casino in Michigan offers a responsible gambling section featuring tips and information about the tools available. Click or tap on the “RG” logo to access this information.
  • You can set deposit, time, and bet limits on your online casino account in Michigan.
  • If you are concerned about how much you are gambling, you can request a cooling-off period or self-exclude.
  • The Michigan Association on Problem Gambling provides support for Michiganders. It is a non-profit organization that serves as the state’s National Council on Problem Gambling affiliate.
  • You can call 1-800-GAMBLER at any time if you need support. Other helpful organizations include SAMHSA and Gamblers Anonymous.

More information about responsible gambling

Michigan Gaming Control Board

The Michigan Gaming Control Board oversees all the state’s online casinos, poker sites, and sportsbooks. It ensures that legal casino apps comply with their licensing conditions, treat players fairly, act with integrity, and uphold responsible gambling regulations.

The board can also intervene if you have a complaint about an online casino in Michigan. You can visit the MGCB’s patron disputes page and check out the Internet Gaming/Sports Betting section for details on how to complain about a licensed Michigan online casino.

These are the MGCB’s contact details:

  • Address: 3062 West Grand Blvd., Suite L-700, Detroit, MI 48202
  • Phone number: 313-456-4100

Michigan online casinos FAQs

You must be 21 or older to play online casino games, enter online poker tournaments, or bet on sports in Michigan. Most land-based casinos also require you to be at least 21 years of age. Still, players aged 18 or older are welcome at the Ojibwa Baraga, Ojibwa Marquette, Island Resort, Leelanau Sands, Lac Vieux, Soaring Eagle, and Turtle Creek tribal casinos.

The legal age for lottery games is 18 in Michigan. You can also place pari-mutuel bets on horse races, enter daily fantasy sports contests, and take part in charitable gaming from the age of 18.

There are 15 legal online gambling sites in Michigan: BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars Palace, DraftKings, Eagle Casino & Sports, FanDuel, FireKeepers, Four Winds, Golden Nugget, Hollywood Casino, Play Gun Lake, Fanatics, PokerStars, Sports Illustrated, and WynnBET. State law permits a maximum of 15 gambling sites—three tethered to commercial casinos and 12 linked to federally recognized tribes.

Social and sweepstakes online casinos are no longer available in Michigan. They left the state in 2023 following a clampdown from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Your only option is to play at a legal online casino that holds a license from the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

BetMGM is the best online casino for MI residents. It offers a larger and more diverse range than rival online casinos in Michigan, including lots of exclusives. BetMGM also runs on high-quality software, provides secure payouts, offers reliable customer service, and rolls out competitive bonuses.

BetMGM typically provides the largest payouts on progressive jackpot slots, as it has a larger player base than any other Michigan online casino. It also offers lots of high RTP slots and table games. If you are looking for an online casino with the fastest payouts, head to BetRivers, where you can cash out in one hour or less.

You may be able to download a Michigan casino app from out of state, but you cannot use it for real money gaming. Michigan casino apps require you to be physically located within state lines, and you must turn on your device’s location services when using them.

Michigan casinos use geolocation verification software as part of their website and mobile applications. This geolocation provides pinpoint location on a player to ensure they are located within state limits.

Most online casinos in Michigan accept deposits via credit card or PayPal. But it’s best to know your preferred method of payment before signing up.

Generally speaking, Visa and Mastercard are widely included as options. Some online casinos offer American Express, as well.

PayPal is one of the most popular forms of payment for online casino. Players should look out for any additional fees that may be included with deposits and transactions through PayPal.

Keep in mind that some banks have policy about online casino. For example, some big banks have adopted policy to disallow deposits to online casino providers.

Online gambling winnings are only taxable if you end the year with a net profit. Any losses are deductible from winnings, so you will be liable for tax only if you end the year in the black.

If so, the state income tax is 4.25%, and you will also need to pay federal taxes, which will depend upon your tax bracket. Your gambling profits will be added to all other income you earned throughout the year for tax purposes.
