Pros and Cons to Sweepstakes and Social Casinos in Ohio

Real money online casinos have not yet been given the green light in Ohio, so sweepstakes and social casinos are the only action in town right now. They have their pros and cons, as explained below.

  • It is quicker, easier, and more convenient to play games at these sites than to visit land-based casinos in Ohio.
  • The slots at social and sweepstakes casinos tend to have a lower house edge than the slot machines at physical casinos in the Buckeye State.
  • The sites give you the chance to play table games like blackjack and video poker for free, so you can master the optimal strategy before playing at one of Ohio’s land-based casinos.
  • You cannot win real money on each spin of the reels or each hand when playing at these sites.
  • The process of redeeming a cash prize at a sweepstakes or social casino can take a week or more at some sites.
  • Social and sweeps casinos offer fewer games than the best real money online casinos in neighboring Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Are online casinos legal in Ohio?

No, online casinos are not legal in Ohio. However, Ohioans aged 18 or older can play online slots, blackjack, roulette, and other games at social casinos and sweepstakes casinos.

Section 2915.01 of the Ohio Revised Code defines sweepstakes as “any game, contest, or promotion where no payment or consideration is required for a person to participate or become eligible to receive a prize, with the outcome determined by chance.”

Under Ohio sweepstakes law, players can redeem premium coins for cash prizes and gift cards at sites like WOW Vegas and High 5 Casino. You cannot buy the premium coins, as you must receive them for free, and they can only be used on games of chance, such as slots and table games.

Will Ohio legalize online casinos in the future?

Ohio lawmakers explored the prospect of legalizing online casinos in February 2024. The Study Commission on the Future of Gaming in Ohio, an eight-person committee led by Rep. Jay Edwards and Sen. Nathan Manning, met for preliminary talks to inform possible future legislation.

Members were presented with a study from Vixio and Light & Wonder, which suggested that Ohio could generate $255 million in annual tax revenue from legal online casinos. That would require a 20% revenue tax rate.

Ohio rolled out legal online sports betting in January 2023, so online casinos could be next. Lawmakers would need to file an online casino bill, which would then need to clear the House and the Senate, and the governor would need to sign it into law.

Right now, Ohio residents can head over the border to play legal online casino games in Michigan, Pennsylvania or West Virginia, so Ohio lawmakers decide to follow suit.

What online casino games are available in Ohio?

Ohioans can play hundreds of high-quality online casino games at sites like WOW Vegas, Pulsz, and McLuck. They offer a similar selection of games to the best US online casinos, as the games are often sourced from the same software providers, such as NetEnt.

Sweeptastic and Chanced both offer French roulette games. You can play virtual French roulette at Sweeptastic and live French roulette at Chanced. French roulette has a lower house edge than American and European roulette, so it is the best option for Ohioans.

Video Poker

You will notice lots of video poker terminals if you visit a resort like Hollywood Casino Columbus or Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati. These games require you to build the best possible five-card poker hand, and you play against the house rather than your fellow players.

Some online casinos host video poker games too. Players in Ohio will find video poker at Sweepstastic, Chumba Casino, and a couple of other sites. These games also have a low house edge, but you must learn which cards to hold and which to discard before the draw.

WOW Vegas, High 5, Pulsz, Chumba Casino, and McLuck operate legally in Ohio. They must adhere to the strict consumer protection laws laid down by the state government and the federal government.
